EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:
The City Council will present the Gun Violence Awareness Day and Month Proclamation.
STAFF RECOMMENDATION:
Present the Proclamation.

DESCRIPTION:
June is recognized nationally as Gun Violence Awareness Month, and Gun Violence Awareness Day
is observed on the first Friday of June. This year on June 7, many people will demonstrate their
support of gun violence awareness by wearing orange in remembrance of Hadiya Pendleton, who
was shot and killed on a playground in Chicago when she was a young teen.
With this proclamation, the City renews its commitment to reduce gun violence and encourage
responsible gun ownership in our community and country.

A PROCLAMATION OF THE CITY COUNCIL

"Gun Violence Awareness Day and Month"
WHEREAS, every day, 120 Americans are killed by gun violence and more than 200 are shot and wounded, with an average of nearly 18,000 gun -
related homicides every year; and
WHEREAS, California has an average of 3,299 gun -related deaths every year, with a rate of 8.2 deaths per 100,000 people, California has the 45th
highest rate of gun -related deaths in the United States; and
WHEREAS, gun -related homicides and assaults are concentrated in cities, with more than half of all gun -related deaths in the nation occurring in 127
cities; and
WHEREAS, 57% of gun -related deaths in the United States are by firearm suicide; an average of 25,205 deaths per year; and
WHEREAS, cities across the nation, including Dublin, work tirelessly to protect their residents from gun -related violence; and
WHEREAS, on the first Friday in June, many people wear orange to raise awareness about gun violence and honor gun violence victims and
survivors. Wearing orange is in remembrance Hadiya Pendleton, who was shot at age 15 on a playground in Chicago. The tradition was started by a
group of Hadiya's friends to commemorate her life.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Dublin does hereby proclaim Friday, June 7, 2024 to be Gun Violence
Awareness Day, and the month of June to be Gun Violence Awareness Month in the City of Dublin. The City of Dublin will light The Wave in orange for
June 7 -9, 2024 to help raise awareness about gun violence and encourages all citizens to support their local communities' efforts to prevent the tragic
effects of gun violence, and to honor and value human life.
