STAFF RECOMMENDATION: Present the Proclamation. FINANCIAL IMPACT: None. DESCRIPTION: Domestic Violence Awareness and Prevention Month is recognized annually during the month of October. October is significant because in October 1987, the first Domestic Violence Awareness Month was observed, which also marked the introduction of the first national domestic violence toll -free hotline. In 1989 the U.S. Congress designated October as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month and such legislation has passed every year since. STRATEGIC PLAN INITIATIVE: None. Page 1 of 2 1 ATTACHMENTS: 1) Domestic Violence Awareness and Prevention Month Proclamation Page 2 of 2 2 Attachment I A PROCLAMATION OF THE CITY COUNCIL CITY OF D UBLIN, CALIFORNIA "Domestic Violence Awareness and Prevention Month" WHEREAS, one in every three women will experience domestic violence during her lifetime; and approximately 15.5 million children are exposed to domestic violence every year; and WHEREAS, the problem of domestic violence is not confined to any group or groups of people, but crosses all economic, racial, gender, educational, religious, and societal barriers, and is sustained by societal indifference; and WHEREAS, victims of domestic violence should have access to medical and legal services, counseling, transitional housing, and other supportive services so that they can escape the cycle of abuse; and WHEREAS, the City of Dublin encourages victims of domestic violence and their families to seek assistance from Rewire Community, Tri-Valley Haven, and other appropriate victims services organizations, and recognizes the compassion and dedication of the individuals who provide services to victims of domestic violence; and WHEREAS, local programs, state coalitions, national organizations, and other agencies nationwide are committed to increasing public awareness of domestic violence and its prevalence, and to eliminating it through prevention and education. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Dublin City Council does hereby proclaim October 2024 as `Domestic Violence Awareness and Prevention Month" in the City of Dublin and encourages the community to be cognizant of the important work done by domestic violence programs and victims service providers, as well as actively participate in the scheduled activities and programs that work towards the elimination of personal and institutional violence against women and children.
