2002 PLANNZN~ MEET~N6,
The next meeting of the planni~'me~timj for the East Bey Stand Down
;~00Z will be held on February t3 starti~ ~t 7:00 p.m. at the Veterans Hall, 400
Hartz Avenue. in Danville.
What is a Stand bown? Stand-downs were r~med in Vietnam foe the
relatively safe times when combat troops could get o shave, shower, clean clothing
and other comforts. The term was used c~jain thirteen yeeee ago to de~cribe a
way to help displaced vets by the Vietnam Veterans of 5~n blego. Since that
time there hcrve been hundreds of Stand Downs held throughout the country.
This ia ouP third yea~.
Why are we doir~g this? ...Because it works to help b~e~k the cycle of
homelessness ....Because vets earned extr~ help by virtue of their service to
their country .... Because vets have proven they can complete a tough ~sstgnment
in their p~st, so they can be counted on todo it again. This is a hand up, not a
handout.
The community is invited to help! Help is needed in all areas, especially:
sponsoring meals, do,arians of new clothing (particulaHy underwear and socks),
safety and security, and office work prior during and after the event. Came fo
the planning meeting to learn wher~ you can lend a handJ
