The Valley Children's Museum is attempting.to bring a non-profit, interactive, hands-on family venue to the region. Staff recommends that the City Council receive the presentation. Included in the feasibility study, completed by AMS Research and Planning, Inc., and presented to city leaders in May 2001, was the recommendation for VCM to create awareness as to what a hands-on museum will provide for the families of this area. VCM's site & exhibit committees are exploring two options: a small storefront museum and a "Museum-on.Wheels". First Annual Black Tie Gala Mark your calendars for Saturday, March 23, 2002! The Valley Children's Museum's first annual black tie gala, "Big Hands Helping Little Hands," will be held at the Biackhawk Museum in Danville. A Special Event Committee has been formed and has laid the groundwork for what's sure to be a fabulous event. Plans include dinner, entertainment and a silent auction to accommodate approximately 300 people. Tickets will be available beginning in The storefront museum would consist of 4-5 interactive exhibits targeting children aged 0-8. The "Museum-on-Wheels" would bring interactive, educational exhibits to schools and community events throughout the region. The purpose of the interim museum will be to provide children, adults and potential donors a small sampling of what VCM has planned for the larger museum. The goal is to open this interim museum by the Fall of 2002. VCM is very excited to be bringing this educational play space to our communities. Check out the volunteer opportunities on page 4, spread the word and get involved. You, too, can help make this happen! December. Proceeds from this event will go towards funding of the "mini-museum". As more details become available, they will be posted on VCM's website and in future mailings. These are the values that have been established by the Valley Children's Museum Board of Directors. Come Play (& Learnt)With Us The Valley Children's Museum offers hands-on, play-based learning experiences to children in Alameda and Contra Costa counties. Parents and caregivers often question why play is so important for children throughout childhood. Play-based experiences function integrally in the overall process of a child's personal development. While playing, children explore different materials .and concepts, integrate past and new experiences, and experiment with a variety of emotions and social interactions. Play is a necessary and valuable aspect of children's lives, allowing them a time and place to engage fully in their surrounding world and with both adults and their peers. When children play, they have the opportunity to master fine and gross motors skills, experience the world through all of their senses, and integrate previously acquired knowledge with new discoveries. Through play, children make decisions, solve problems and learn self-expression. When children play together, they gain new perspectives in life and learn how to communicate, interact and cooperate with each other. Curiosity, imagination, and critical thinking skills grow and intertwine as children take new risks, manipulate new materials, and try out new roles. Play experiences for children are as varied as individual children themselves. While each child plays in a unique way, however, all children develop critical social, cognitive, and motor sl~lls through the process of their play. Frequently, the resulting skills, knowledge and positive self-esteem that are gained in the process of playing are more valuable than the object or game that has been produced. VCM exhibits are designed with flexibility in mind, not only in order to spark all children's imaginations, but also to address their multiple developmental ranges and capabilities.
