Attachment 1 provides an aerial view of the development. Dublin Gateway is a medical office complex totaling 178,000 square feet. The project will be built in phases. Phase I includes a three- story, 62,300 square foot Wellness Center and a three-story, 57,700 square foot medical office building. Both buildings are connected on the ground floor by a pedestrian walkway. Surface parking will serve Phase I of the project. Phase II includes a three-story, 58,000 square foot medical office building at the corner of Dublin Boulevard and Glynnis Rose Drive and a four-level parking structure along Koll Center Drive. The focal point of the project is the circular pedestrian plaza located at the corner of Dublin Boulevard and Tassajara Road (Attachment 2). The plaza will be defined by a low fountain wall and palm trees along the outer ring. A partial ring structure along the inner-ring of the plaza brings the scale of the three-story buildings down to the pedestrian level. Enhanced paving within the circular plaza creates a decorative look to the space which will be highlighted with the placement of public art in the center. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- COpy TO: Heritage & Cultural Arts Commission/Triad Partners, Inc. Page 1 of2 ITEM NO. 8,L G:\COUNCILlAgenda Statements\2006\9-5 Gateway Med. PA.doc As a condition of construction, the City Council required the developer, Triad Partners, Inc., to include a public art element in the project. The developer has selected California artist Archie Held to create the artwork for the project. Staff and representatives for the developer met on several occasions to discuss the design for the artwork. Mr. Held who hails from Point Richmond, California, received both an Undergraduate Degree in Painting, Sculpture and Graphic Arts, and a Graduate Degree in Sculpture from UCLA, graduating in 1980. He specializes in stainless steel, bronze, stone and water elements. Mr. Held has completed over seventy pieces of indoor and outdoor sculpture that have been installed both nationally and inter-nationally. Some of his many significant permanent works of sculpture include installations at W.W. Grainger World Headquarters in Chicago, University of Science and Arts in Oklahoma, the Hyatt Regency in Arizona, the Bellagio Casino in Nevada, the Sky Tokyo Club in Japan, SCSI Corporation in Australia, and Midway Trading in Canada. Some local installations include sculptures at Vi chon, Robert Mondavi and Beringer Wineries in Napa, Chevron - Texaco Headquarters at Bishop Ranch in San Ramon, Sacramento City Hall, and Avalon Towers in San Francisco. Attachments 3-5 provide examples of other works by the artist. Mr. Held has proposed a sculpture entitled "Alamilla" (Attachment 6). The form is symbolic of strength and growth. The addition of water, an ancient symbol for cleansing, healing and rebirth, make this an ideal symbol for a health care building. The name is in honor of Dublin's historic Alamilla Spring, which has long served as an oasis for weary travelers. This bronze and stainless steel sculpture will stand 16 feet tall and 9 feet wide at the top. The sculpture pool will be 18 feet in diameter and will provide over 56 linear feet of seating in the front plaza. The piece will be fabricated from sheets of stainless steel and bronze. Six of the bronze panels will be hand textured and given a medium bronze patina. The stainless steel will have a hand grained finish, resulting in soft reflective surfaces. The location of the artwork will be in the center of the circular outdoor pedestrian courtyard, at the southeast corner of Dublin Boulevard and Tassajara Road (Attachment 7). On August 10, 2006, the Heritage and Cultural Arts Commission reviewed the artwork and unanimously recommended approval by the City Council. RECOMMENDATION: It is the recommendation of Staffthat the City Council receive the presentation by Staff and representatives of Triad Partners, Inc. Following the presentation, it is recommended that the City Council approve the artwork or provide alternate direction. ~-::...:~..,;;;~:---.~-::- :~.-_.- :;;;..:'~\ _.. \\ \, \ ,f. of \ I .\\ II \ \ \ "\', \ \ \; ~- , \\\1'1. \.\ \\ \ \ ' \\ \ \ \\ ~ ~\ ~ - '\\ fr>~~~/;! ~i,: :'\' - - , -~~~~;;;..$:~~~ '\ .
