FINANCIAL STATEMENT: None DESCRIPTION: Dublin Pride Week Poster Contest All students from both Public and private schools in the City of Dublin were inVited to participate in this year's Dublin Pride Poster Contest. The students were asked to Create posters that reflected this year's theme "Do Your P~rt!" This year, the Dublin/San Ramon Women's Club volunteered to coordinate the poster contest. This included distributing the materials, judging the posters and making the certificates. Over 400 entries were submitted this year. Each of the participants will be receiving Certificates of Appreciation. The City awards first and second prizes to individuals from each of the following grade categories: Kindergarten-2nd grade, 3rd grade-4th grade, 5th grade-6th grade, 7th grade-8th grade, and 9th grade-12th grade, as well as an overall grand prize winner. The grand prize winner receives a $100 Target gift card, the, first prize winners receive a $30 Target gift card, and second prize winners receive a $15 Target gift card. The grand prize, first prize, and second prize winners also have their posters displayed at the Civic Center and will be presented with Certificates of Merit. Additionally a Classroom Award is given in the amount of $200 to the teacher of the Grand Prize Winner to be used in the classroom. The Blood Drive met the goal set by the American Red Cross of 35 units of blood. Canned Food Drive: This was the second year of the Dublin Pride Week Canned Food Drive. This year's major contributors included the Soroptimist Club and Dublin Girl Scouts. The canned food drive supplied food to the local Children's Emergency Council. Volunteer Day There were several individuals and organizations in the City that volunteered significant time and resources to community clean up and beautification projects on Volunteers Day, Saturday May 8th. All volunteers met at 8:00 a.m. at Emerald Glen Park to receive instructions and supplies for the various projects throughout the community. Vice Mayor Zika began the event with a welcoming address and word of thanks to the volunteers. Several City of Dublin businesses including Mimi's Caf6 (muffins), SafeWay Food & Drug (fruit and drinks) and Armstrong Garden Center (gloves), made donations to benefit the event. All volunteers were given Dublin Pride Week t-shirts and "goodie bags" featuring giveaways from many of the participating organizations. At the completion of the projects, all volunteers were invited to a free barbecue provided by the Dublin Lion's Club. Volunteer Day consisted of the following projects: Creek Clean-Up: This year's creek clean-up took place at Tassajara Creek. There were dozens of volunteers made up of students and other residents. Staff from the City, Dublin San Ramon Service District and Zone 7 served as team leaders to provide volunteers with instructions and act as guides during the event. Senior Projects: There were 20 volunteers that made up the seven separate Senior Project Teams. The teams were able to assist nineteen (19) senior homes with a variety of sweat equity that ranged from cleaning windows to minor home repair. Wells Middle School Projects: Volunteers sanded and painted benches and walls throughout the campus and completed a major landscaping removal project. This project was organized by community volunteer R/chard Hair. Communi~. Rose Garden The City's first community rose bush garden was established at Emerald Glen Park as part of last year's Dublin Pride Week activities. Due to the popularity of last year's event, a plot was made available adjacent to the existing garden. Similar to.last year, interested parties were able to purchase a rosebush for $25 to be planted in the garden. Donors received a special certificate indicating their "ownership" and ID number. A total of 50 roses were purchased as part of this year's event. When the new garden plot is complete, a plaque will be placed at the site with everyone's number and name on it. Alamo Creek Nature Walks This was a new activity for this year's Dublin Pride Week, which was conceived and largely organized by Glen Walder of Wells Middle School. On Saturday May 8th, following a welcoming address by Mayor Lockhart, naturalist and park ranger Patti Cole lead two separate nature walks along the new Alamo Creek Trail exploring the creek's diverse flora and fauna. The purpose of the creek walk was to educate the community on the diversity of plants and animals that live in our own backyard and to inspire everyone to value and preserve it. 2004 Dublin Pride Partners The 2004 Dublin Pride Week events could not have been accomplished without the City's key partners: Waste Management - Dublin Chamber of Commerce Tri-Valley Herald - Dublin San Ramon Services District Zone 7 Water Agency Dublin Lions Club Dublin/San Ramon Women's Club Citilinks These Dublin Pride Partners as well as major event contributors Glen Walder, 'Patti Cole and Richard Hair will be recognized by City Council with a Certificate of Appreciation. RECOMMENDATION Staff recommends that the City Council receive the report and formally recognize poster contest winners and Dublin Pride Partners.
