DESCRIPTION: The Parks and Community Services Department promotes and
supports a high quality of life in Dublin through people, parks and programs. This is accomplished by
developing and implementing quality programs that strengthen community image, provide recreational
experiences, encourage healthy lifestyles and preserve the City's heritage. The Department's recreation,
social and cultural programs are organized in program areas induding playgrounds, preschool, teens,
sports, special events, leisure classes, cultural arts, heritage, seniors and aquatics.
During the past Fiscal Year, the number of participants in the Department's programs continued to
increase, as they have for the past five years. In addition to continuing to keep pace with Dublin's
population growth, the Parks and Community Services Department is also proud of the following
accomplishments during Fiscal Year 2003-2004:
· Acquiring a handicap-accessible charter van for the Senior Center. This has led to expansion of
the popular Trips and Tours Program, as well as provided transportation for other Senior Center
programs such as the Trail Trekkers, monthly special luncheons and bingo dinners.
· Expanding the Dublin Youth Basketball League to include a new division for high school teens.
This has increased participation in the program to over 580 local youth.
· Adding a weekly enrichment component to the Fun in the Sun and Camp Shannon day camp
programs. This has taken successful programs and added something new that creates a memorable
camp expenence.
· Preparing an update to the 1994 Parks and Recreation Master Plan, which will aide the Department
in developing new park and recreation facilities to serve the expanding population.
· Expanding use of the City's program registration and point of sale software to the Swim Center.
This has allowed for more convenient registration for swim lessons.

· Conducting a survey of Dublin teens to determine interest in a teen sports league to accommodate
a sport that is not sponsored by the School District. This has led to the development of a Teen
Bowling League which will debut in spring of2005.
· Developing a location and distance map of existing trails in Dublin, including trails/walkways in
parks.
· Expanding the Day on the Glen Festival to include a City tennis tournament.
· Receiving an "Award of Excellence" from the California Park and Recreation Society for the
"Trail Trekker Program" at the Dublin Senior Center.
Staff will be presenting the Council with information about the benefits of these programs to the
community and the number of people the programs are serving.
RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommends the City Council receive the report.
