DESCRIPTION;
Dublin Pride Week Poster Contest
All students from both public and private schools in the City of Dublin were invited to participate in this
year's Dublin Pride Poster Contest. The students werc asked to create posters that reflected this year's
theme "Do Your Part!" This year, the Dublin/San Ramon Women's Club volunteered to coordinate the
poster contest. This included distributing the materials, judging the posters and making the certificates.
Nearly SOO entries were submitted this year. Each of the participants will be receiving Certificates of
Appreciation. The City awards lirst and second prizes to individuals from each of the following grade
categories: Kindergarten-2nd grade, 3,d grade-4°' grade, Sth grade_6th grade, 7'h grade_So, grade, and 9th
grade-12th grade, as well as an overall grand prize winner. The grand prize winner receives a $1 00 Target
gift card, the, first prize winners receive a $2S Target gift card, and second prize winners receive a $IS
Target gi It card. The grand prize, first prize, and second prize winners also have their posters displayed at
the Civic Center and will be presented with Certificates of Merit. Additionally a Classroom A ward is
given in the amount of $200 to the teacher of the Grand Prize Winner to be used in the classroom. The
Poster Contest winners arc as follows:

Dublin Pride Projects
The following projects were completed as part of Dublin Pride Week 2005:
Communitv Blood Drive
The Community Blood Drive took place at thc Dublin Library on Monday April IS, 2005. The Blood
Drive resulted in the donation of34 units of blood to the American Red Cross.
Canned I,'ood Drive
This was the third year of the Dublin Pride Week Calmed Food Drive. The canned food drivc supplied
food to the local Children's Emergency Council.
Voluuteer Dav
Over 100 Community volunteers donated significant timc and energy to community clean up alld
beautification projects on Volunteer Day, Saturday April 16th. Volunteers met at 8:00 a.m. at Emerald
Glen Park to receive instructions and supplies for the various projects throughout the community. Vice
Mayor Zika began the event with a wclcoming address and word of thanks to the volunteers. All
volunteers were given Duhlin Pridc Weck t-shirts and were provided snacb, juice and water including
muffins donated by Mimi's Café.
At the completion of the projects, all voluntccrs wcrc invited to a free barbecue provided by the Dublin
Lion's Club. Voluntccr Day consisted of the following projects:
Senior Projects: There werc ovcr 50 volunteers that made up the thirteen separate Scnior Project Teams.
Thc teams werc able to assist thirty four (34) senior homes with a variety of sweat equity that ranged from
cleaning windows to minor home repair. There were nearly twiee as many senior projects and voluntccrs
as the previous year.
Heritage Center: Approximately 15 volunteers rakcd, pulled weeds and spread new mulch in areas of the
cemetery.
Alami/la Springs: Approximately 12 volunteers participated in the clean up of the A1amilla Springs area
off of San Ramon Road. This effort was organized by Steve Lockhart and included participation by local
Boy Scouts and other community volunteers.
Fredericksen Elementary School Projects: Volunteers sanded and painted picnic tables and benches at the
school and painted red and white curbs. Approximately 30 volunteers participated in this activity
including a local Cub Scout troop.
It should be noted that Dublin resident Julie Holt volunteered to bc a part of the Dublin Pride Week
Committee this year and played a major role in organizing the volunteer day events and soliciting
volunteers from local schools and churches.
Tassaiara Creek Nature Walk ~11h?
Following the Volunteer Day Activities on April 16'\ naturalist and park ranger Katie Colbcrt Yead a
nature walk along the new Tassl\Îara Crcck Trail exploring the creek's diverse flora and fauna.
Approximately 20 people participated in the walk.
Electronic and Household Hazardous Waste Evcnt
The City sponsored another successful elcetronic waste and household hazardous waste drop off event.
The event was managed by Waste Management and held in the Micro Dcntal parking lot. Despite poor
weather, more hazardous material was collected than in any previous ycar. The event brought in a total of
539 cars. A total of 3S,S51 pounds of electronic material was collected for recycling while 5,746 pounds
was collected for reuse. 30,491 pounds of houschold hazardous waste was eollected, cnsuring that
matcrials such as paint, used oil, batteries, pesticides and other harmful chemicals were disposed of
properly.
"Pride of Dublin" Orchids
A hybrid orchid was created by Frank Fordyce of Fordyce Orchids in Livcrmore, CA, and named in. honor
of the City of Dublin, which he called home for 20 ycars. 100 Pride of Dublin orchids were sold to the
community.

These Dublin Pride Partners as well as the other major contributors previously mentioned will be
recognized by the City Council with a Certificate of Appreciation.
RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommends that the City Council receive the report and formally recognize poster contest winncrs,
Dublin Pride Partners and other major contributors.
