SUBJECT: Dublin Public Library Time Capsule

FINANCIAL STATEMENT: None
DESCRIPTION: The Dublin Public Library project includes a vault for a Time
Capsule at the entrance to the new library. Over the past several months, Staff has conducted an outreach
program in order to obtain input and items for the Time Capsule. This included:
· Press Releases
· Letters to Schools and Community Organizations
· Insert in Chamber of Commerce Newsletter
· Time Capsule Booth at St. Patrick's DaY Celebration
· City Website Survey
· 20th Anniversary Dinner Messages
To date, the following items have been submitted for inclusion in the Time Capsule.
· Commemorative Items from past City facility dedications
· City of Dublin 20th Anniversary Calendar
· City Song Tape
· City "The Future is Now" Marketing Video
· City Fee Schedule
· 2002 St. Patrick's Day Poster
· Shamrock Messages written by 20th Anniversary Dinner Attendees
· Foreign Currency from Dublin Sister City, Bray Ireland
· Student writings, In Fifty Years, by Frederiksen Elementary School, 4th Grade
· Student writings, When I Got Hurt, Dublin Elementary School, 2nd Grade
· Student writings, Dublin in the Year 2052, Mr. Kolcun Writing Class

The Time Capsule survey results are Attachment 1. Respondents provided input in the following
categories: Advertisements; Magazine; Catalogue; Newspaper; Fast Food; Toys; Movie Memorabilia;
Money; Food & Beverage Packages; Utility Bill; Small Items; and #1 Album. Staff anticipates obtaining
the top items in each category for the Time Capsule.
In order to coordinate with the Library construction schedule, the Time Capsule needs to be placed into
the ground the week of July 21, 2002. The deadline for submittal of items for the Time Capsule is June 1,
2002.
Because of space constraints, it may not be possible to include all of the items that have been submitted in
the Time Capsule. Therefore, Staff is requesting direction from the City Council on the following:
1. Should a subcommittee of the Council be formed to work with Staff on the selection process or should
Staff decide based on overall direction from the Council?
2. Are there items that are not on the list that the City Council would like to see included in the Time
Capsule?
Further, Staff would like direction from the Council as to whether there should be a ceremony when the
Time Capsule is placed in the ground. The ceremony could include the City Council placing the Time
Capsule in the vault and ceremoniously placing the lid on the vault.
