CITY COUNCIL MEETING DATE: (February 2,1999)
SUBJECT:
City Participation in Dublin Pride Week and Acceptance of Gifts to the
City (Report Prepared by: Sue Barnes)

2) Letter dated January 25, 1999, from Annette Borges, Livennore-
Dublin Disposal, outlining co-sponsorship agreement.
RECOMMENDATION:

1) Approve participation with a City contribution not to exceed $4000
2) Accept gifts from Livermore-Dublin Disposal and the Tri-Valley
Herald, and direct staff to prepare formal acknowledgement.
FI~ANCIAL STATEMENT:
$4000 was included in the Fiscal Year 1998-99 budget. In addition,
Livermore-Dublin Disposal will contribute $3025, and the Tri- Valley
Herald will contribute a variety of advertising and promotional services.

DESCRIPTION:
Dublin Pride Week is an annual event, which seeks to promote a positive image for the City of Dublin.
The goal is to seek ways in which individuals or groups can act to improve the community. The motto of
the event is "Dublin Pride, City-Wide."
This year, Dublin Pride Week is scheduled to begin on Sunday, March 14th, and will conclude on
Saturday, March 20th. March 15th marks the beginning of Livermore-Dublin Disposal's first special
clean-up for the year (two others will be held in June and September). During the clean-up, Dublin
households can dispose of up to three cubic yards of refuse at no additional charge. Residents will be
encouraged to clean up their own properties as part of the Dublin Pride Week activities.
A committee comprised of City staff, two City Council members, a school district representative and a
Livermore-Dublin Disposal representative has met twice and has developed a plan to implement the
following goals:
1. Continue to Expand Community Awareness of Dublin Pride Week:
· Promotional posters will be distributed to area businesses by police department (designed and
printed by Tri-Valley Herald).
· Press releases will be sent to area newspapers, and PSA' s to radio stations.

· Announcements will appear in school.newsletters and on reader boards.
· Announcements will appear on Channel 30.
· Magnet picture frames printed with the Dublin Pride Week logo, as well as a calendar of City of
Dublin events will be distributed at the St. Patrick's Day Festival.

2. Involve City School Children in Dublin Pride Activities:
. Distribute "Dublin Pride" promotional items to each child that attends school in Dublin.
. Sponsor poster contest for grades K-12, and writing contest for grades 4-l2, with prizes.
· All participants will receive a certificate of appreciation;
· Winners at each grade level will receive monetary prizes (donated directly by Livermore-
Dublin Disposal);
· Winning entries of poster and writing contests will be displayed at Civic Center;
. Top poster and writing contest winners will be invited to ride in the parade;
. Contest winners will be printed in the Tri-Valley Herald (donated).
3. Encourage Community Improvement Projects:
. Individuals, classes, groups, and business will be encouraged to "Make a Difference in Dublin" by
donating their time to community-improvement projects.
· As a new event this year, the committee will be organizing a creek clean-up and soliciting help
from service organizations.
· The Tri-Valley Herald will join with the City to present an award to an outstanding project.
. Participants will be acknowledged at a City Council meeting.

*LDD will contribute $2150 to the City, and $875 directly to the contest winners
Recommendation:
Staff recommends that the City Council approve City participation and authorize City expenditures to
promote Dublin Pride Week, not to exceed $4000. Staff also recommends that the Council accept the gift
from Livermore-Dublin Disposal, the in-kind donations from the Tri-valley Herald, and direct staff to
formally acknowledge the generous donations.

RE: Dublin Pride Celebration
Livermore Dublin Disposal is pleased to participate in the Dublin Pride Celebration.
We are committing $2.150.00 towards the environmental awareness program. In addition we have
committed $875.00 for the awards program for Dublin Pride Poster & Essay Contest. This mone~.
will purchase gift certificates from Target to be presented to students from the Dublin School
system.
Sheila Fagliano, Recycling Manager for Livermore Dublin Disposal, is on the Dublin Pride
Conunittee and will be in charge of awarding each child who participates with a "Certificate of
Merit for Participating" in the Dublin Pride Poster & Essay Contest. Last year Livermore Dublin
Disposal presented 300 students with a certificate. All of the paper, presentation folders and
certificates were provided by Livermore Dublin Disposal and we will again provide those
materials.
Livermore Dublin Disposal will also provide a Handy Hauler to a nonprofit organization that will
sponsor a specific project to help clean up the Dublin Community and is approved by the City of
Dublin.
The winners of the Dublin Poster & Essay Contest will ride in our restored antique garbage truck.
We provided this truck last year and look forward to showing off this vehicle again.
Mrs. Fagliano, Sue Barnes, and the City Staff have been working together to provide tht: bt:st
Dublin Pride Celebration possible and we thank you for letting us be a part of the Dublin
Community.
