FINANCIAL STATEMENT: Receive report None DESCRIPTION: The Parks and Community Services Department has been selected to receive three Awards of Achievement from the California Parks & Recreation Society (CPRS) in the categories of Neighborhood/Community Life, Agency Brochure and Special Focus Brochure. The winners of these awards were chosen by peers from cities throughout California. These are another set of several high level statewide awards the Department has won in the last decade. The "Heritage Center Exhibit Restoration Project" won an Award of Achievement for Neighborhood / Community Life. The goal of the restoration project was to design a fresh new exhibit that engages visitors through innovative and interactive exhibits. The exhibit honors Dublin's history and the diversity of its founding fathers, as well as acknowledges the ongoing diversity of the current citizenship and its positive effects in shaping Dublin's future. The new exhibit has resulted in a significant increase in attendance at the Heritage Center with over 2, I 00 visitors since opening in August 2006. The remaining Awards of Achievement were for two of the Department's successful marketing programs. The City's "Welcome to Dublin" New Resident Marketing Brochure received the award for a Special Focus Brochure. The new resident brochure was developed to enhance the sense of community by welcoming new residents and familiarizing them with the City's recreational and cultural programs. Distribution of the brochure has resulted in a 48% increase in new customers for the Department's classes and activities. Customers have commented on how pleased they were to receive the resource. In particular they have appreciated the map of Parks, Facilities, Schools and Public Art that is included in the brochure. " G The Summer 2006 Edition of "The Guide" received the award for Agency Brochure. "The Guide" is a familiar publication for Dublin residents. In 2006, an effort was made to make the publication more personable for customers of all ages, ethnic and cultural backgrounds by incorporating more cartoon drawings, which have common meaning among all customers. The Department hired an artist to create numerous cartoons drawings of "Glen the Guide" participating in recreational activities such as soccer, art, swimming, acting, playing the guitar and even doing Yoga. The new cartoon graphics made The Guide more visually appealing and personally engaging for a greater cross section of Dublin's diverse community, which may have contributed to a 13% increase in registrations for programs and services during summer 2006. Expanding the focus on Glen the Guide has also helped the Department to become a more recognizable brand in the region for recreational programs and services. RECOMMENDATION: It is recommended that the City Council receive the report. Page 2 of2
