RECOMMENDATION:fi ~Staffrequests that the Mayor appoint an ad-hoc subcommittee to

FINANCIAL STATEMENT:
The adopted 1996-97 Budget includes an appropriation of$4,000.
DESCRIPTION: For several years the City has coordinated an annual program
designated as Dublin Pride Week. The original concept was to instill community pride and encourage
clean-up efforts, similar to a "Clean-up, Fix - Up Week." The program has developed over the years to
include efforts by school children focusing on the Dublin Pride message. The designated week is
typically coordinated with a special Saturday city-wide clean-up. The next clean-up day will be March
29, 1997. It is suggested that March 22 - March 29, 1997 be designated as Dublin Pride Week.
The activities undertaken in previous years with local school children have included coloring contests and
.- the display of selected posters at the Civic Center. The school efforts have included both public and
. . private schools in the City of Dublin. In addition, the City ,has typically purchased small promotional
items imprinted with the Dublin Pride Week message for distribution to students. This has included
buttons, pencils, sunglasses, etc.
In 1996 the City had increased efforts to promote the event. The project also received a donation from
Livermore Dublin Disposal. The Company had special promotional funds available due to the
introduction of new services in the community. The City also received from Dublin Ranch Homes, a
donation of printed litter bags advertising Dublin Pride Week. Posters made by local school children were
displayed at the Civic Center and the City distributed funds to Dublin Unified School District for poster
contest awards. Sunglasses were distributed to all students and the City purchased coffee mugs imprinted
with the City seal. It is appropriate to review the impact of these efforts and to discuss with the School
District and community representatives, efforts which can most effectively result in a successful event.
In order to address the scope of the 1997 Dublin Pride Week activities, Staff would recommend that the
Mayor appoint an ad-hoc subcommittee. Staff is typically involved in the ordering of any promotional
items, soliciting input from interest groups, preparing a report to the City Council on planned activities,
preparing press releases, and other tasks required to coordinate these efforts. In addition, under laws
regulating public meetings, Staff will need to prepare and post meeting agendas. If any Councilmembers
have ideas or comments on the event, it would be helpful to incorporate this input at this time. As in the
past, an outline of the scheduled elements and costs associated with of the Pride Week campaign, will be
. presented at a future City Council meeting.
It is recommended that the Mayor appoint an ad-hoc Dublin Pride Week Subcommittee.
