DESCRIPTION: In early 2006 the Parks and Community Services Commission and
City Council reviewed the conceptual plan for the Dougherty Hills Park Dog Park (Attachment 1). The
plan included separate runs for large and small dogs and other site amenities such as parking, benches,
agility course, public art and landscaping.
Staff is seeking input from the City Council on whether or not to install two additional drinking fountains
at the park. Although the dog park has not yet opened to the public, the City has already received
comments from two residents who have voiced a concern over the current location of the drinking
fountain. According to the residents the drinking fountain at the entrance to the dog park is not ideal. It
should be located within the fenced areas so it is easily accessible to the dogs without the pet owners
needing to leash their dogs and take them out of the fenced area to access the drinking fountain.
As shown in the approved conceptual plan, it was originally contemplated to have a drinking fountain

located at the entrance to the dog park. The advantage of this location is that it is surrounded by concrete
and that the excess water would not cause over saturation of nearby turf and soil (an occurrence
commonly observed at other dog parks). Attachment #2 shows the proposed locations of the new drinking
fountains within each area.
Construction has recently been completed and the three month maintenance period has commenced. If
approved, the drinking fountains would be installed within the next three months prior to opening for the
public. The estimated cost to install two additional drinking fountains is $14,500. There are sufficient
funds remaining in the project contingency.
At the January 22nd Commission meeting, the Parks and Community Services Commission recommended
that the City Council approve the installation of the two drinking fountains.
RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends that the City Council provide direction on
whether two additional drinking fountains should be added to the bog Park.
