SUBJECT:
City Participation in Dublin Pride Week and Acceptance of Gift to
the City (Prepared by: Lou Ann Riera-Texeira, Assistant to the

FINANCIAL STATEMENT:
A City contribution not to exceed $4,000 has been requested. Funds
are available in the Fiscal Year 1996-97 City Council Promotional
account. In addition, Livermore Dublin Disposal has generously
contributed $2,500 to be used to fund Dublin Pride Week activities.
DESCRIPTION: On January 7, 1997, City Councilmembers Valerie Barnes and Janet
'. Lockhart were appointed to an Ad-Hoc City Council Dublin Pride Week Subcommittee. Councilmembers
, ' , Barnes and Lockhart have been working with community representatives, including the school district,
local businesses and service organizations, to plan activities for Dublin Pride Week - March 22 - 29, 1997.
Dublin Pride Week is designed to instill community pride and encourage clean-up efforts. The designated
week is typically coordinated with a special Saturday citywide clean-up, scheduled for March 29, 1997.
The following outlines the proposed activities:
o Work with schools to sponsor the following:
o Poster Contest for grades K-5 (with prizes)
o Speech Contest for grades 6-12 (with prizes)
o Schools will select winning posters to be displayed at local businesses and at the Civic Center
o Work with community groups to coordinate speech contest theme and selection of winners
o Purchase promotional gifts commemorating Dublin Pride Week to be distributed to the schools
o Work with community groups to sponsor a limerick contest
o

Work with Livermore Dublin Disposal to promote special clean-up

In the past the City banner poles have been utilized; however, the poles are currently unavailable as one
has been damaged in the recent winter storms.
Previously, the City Council has contributed funding on a "not to exceed" basis. At this time, the sub- .:'"
committee has estimated the following expenses:

Councilmembers Barnes and Lockhart can provide additional information on this item at the Council
meeting. Staff recommends that the City Council approve the City's participation in the 1997 Dublin
Pride Week activities, and authorize staff to reimburse the sub-committee for expenses associated with
Dublin Pride Week activities not to exceed $4,000. In addition, staff recommends that the City Council
accept the gift contributed by Livermore Dublin Disposal and direct staff to formally acknowledge the
generous donation.
