CITY CLERK File # D~[l2]~-l1J1QJ AGENDA STATEMENT CITY COUNCIL MEETING DATE: March 18, 1997 SUBJECT: Authorization to Solicit Bids - Contract 97-06 Civic Center Waterproofing Report Prepared by: Lee S. Thompson, Public Works Director EXHIBITS ATTACHED: Specification will be available at City Council meeting RECOMMENDATION: i)\' Authorize Staff to solicit bids to spray the Civic Center with a , ,/ waterproof coating FINANCIAL STATEMENT: Total budgeted in C.I.P. #9392: Expended to date: Remaining for additional work: $25,000.00 5.762.74 $19,237.26 DESCRIPTION: This project was developed to locate and resolve several rainwater leaks in the Civic Center building that appear to be coming from exterior walls. To date, below-grade waterproofing has been installed in two areas (outside the Police records office and outside an area of Development Services) where water appeared to be coming from the area at which the wall meets the concrete slab. This project also funded sealing of downspouts on the roof and cleaning the white metal panels at the entrance to the Civic Center. Some rainwater leakage is still occurring. It has been recommended by both the Civic Center architect and by a waterproofing contractor that the stone surface of the building be sprayed with an elastomeric material which would seal the stone and fill cracks and imperfections in the grout between the stones. The architect's recommendation was that the stone be sealed not only as a means of eliminating some of the water leaks but also from the standpoint that the waterproofing material would keep the stone from deteriorating. An initial cost estimate for the work is approximately $28,000, which exceeds the remaining budget for this project; however, in a competitive bid situation, the cost may ultimately be less. Staffhas prepared the bid proposal to include two alternates, in the event that the bids do exceed the budget: 1) Seal the Police Wing only at this time. (Sealing of the Administrative Wing could be included in next fiscal year's budget.) 2) Seal the entire Civic Center at this time. Staff recommends that the City Council authorize solicitation of bids for this waterproofing work. ------------------------------------------------------~------------ COPIES TO: 4.7 ITEM NO. g: \miscp roj\bldgseal\agstaut1
