Mayor Lockhart and Vice Mayor Hildenbrand currently serve as the Citizens and Organization of the Year Committee. Immediately after close of the nomination period, the Committee arranged for the judging to be done by impartial individuals or organizations outside the City of Dublin. The winning organization will be announced at the City's "Wild About our Volunteers!" event being held on Friday, February 23, 2007 at the Dublin Senior Center. In addition, the winning organization's name will be engraved on the perpetual plaque, which hangs just inside the Council Chambers. The organizations nominated this year are: Dublin Host Lions Club, Rotary Club of Dublin, and the Dublin Historic Preservation Association. Representatives from each organization were invited to attend this City Council meeting and invitations have been extended for them to attend the Volunteer Recognition event on February 23rd. Staff recommends that the Mayor present each nominee with a Certificate of Recognition for being nominated as Dublin's 2006 Organization of the Year. ORGANIZATION OF THE YEAR - 2006 DUBLIN HOST LIONS CLUB SPECIFIC ACHIEVEMENTS FOR THE YEAR 2006 Februarv 8th - ANNUAL LIONS STUDENT SPEAKER CONTEST - administered an annual contest promoting high school students public speaking ability in a nation-wide tournament. Februarv 24th - FLAG DAY - conducted annual essay contest for grade school children to better their education and understanding of the meaning and significance of the United States Flag. March 18th _19th - ST. PATRICK'S DAY PARADE- sponsored, organized, provided marshals and participated in the annual Dublin celebration. March 18th _19th - ST. PATRICK'S DAY FESTIVAL - sponsored and secured the necessary special clearances and permits for the operation of the Dublin City Beer & Wine booths. April 29th - PRIDE WEEK - contributed clean-up crews and cooked a barbecue lunch for all participants in the annual Dublin beautification effort. Mav 5th - DUBLIN POLICE BICYCLE RODEO - assisted organizing and the operation of the annual Dublin Police bicycle safety training and demonstration programs. Mav 1ih - DUBLIN PARTNERS IN EDUCATION - organized and operated a beverage service for the DPIE awards celebration. June 9th - DUBLIN HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR BREAKFAST - supplied and cooked hot food for the annual senior student event. June 11th - RELAY FOR LIFE - provided the cooking team for the annual Cancer Society Relay for Life participants Sunday morning breakfast. June 27th-Julv 4th - FOURTH OF JULY - in cooperation and coordination with the Dublin Senior Foundation and the GFWC Dublin/San Ramon Women's Club organized, setup and operated a fireworks booth for local citizens celebrating the Fourth of July. Julv 6th - BLIND DAY AT THE FAIR - organized, transported and escorted blind clients to enjoy the exhibits and festivities at the Alameda County Fair. September 16th -1 th - DAY ON THE GLEN - cooked barbecue meals for attendees at the annual Dublin City Day on the Glen activities. September 16th_17th - DAY ON THE GLEN - sponsored and secured the necessary special clearances and permits for the operation of the Dublin City Beer & Wine booth. October 25th - KALEIDOSCOPE - cooked hot dogs, hamburgers and cheeseburgers for the Easter Seals Bay Area Halloween "SPOOOOKTACULAR" barbecue. October 27th - Dublin HIGH SCHOOL HOMECOMING - cooked hotdogs, sausages and steaks for the volunteers and spectators attending the annual homecoming football game festivities. December th & 14th - SANTA CLAUS - provided 'Dublin's Own' personification of the real Santa Claus at the City's Tree Lighting ceremonies and the Dublin Senior Center's "Breakfast with Santa" activities. Monthlv - STUDENT OF THE MONTH - recognize and provide monetary rewards to Dublin High School students for scholastic achievements. Quarterlv - STUDENT OF THE QUARTER - recognize and provide monetary rewards to Valley High School students for scholastic achievements. Ongoing - LEO CLUB - sponsor, stimulate and guide local high school students in public service projects throughout the City of Dublin. Ongoing - USED EYEGLASSES AND USED CELL PHONES - collect used eyeglasses and used cellular telephones for refurbishing and international distribution to those in need. Ongoing - DONATIONS - budget for and distribute funds to: Dublin High School and Valley High School student scholarships, Wilderness Camp for the Deaf, Boy Scouts, Hope Hospice, Dublin/San Ramon Women's Club, the Oakland Blind Center, the Center for the Visually Impaired, Lions Eye Foundation and the Dublin Senior Foundation. The Rotary Club of Dublin focuses its attention on Community Service, Youth Service, Vocational Service, International Service, and Club Service. Description of events that directly benefited the residents of Dublin durine: the past year: The Rotary Club of Dublin engaged in several community service projects that directly benefit Dublin residents. These include Child Safety Day, Serving Seniors, Sponsoring High School Interact Clubs, Adopting Elementary Schools, Assisting Other Dublin Non-Profit Organizations, Dave Burton Scholarship, Serve other Local Groups, and International Projects recognizing the City of Dublin. Details are as follows: 1. Child Safetv Dav: On March 18 and 19, Dublin Rotary sponsored the Child Safety Booth at the St. Patrick's Day Festival. Almost 400 infants and children were fingerprinted. 2. Servinq Seniors: Each month, Dublin Rotary serves lunch to seniors at the Dublin Senior Center. Rotarians look forward to this opportunity to provide this service. Sponsorina Interact Clubs: Interact is a Rotary-sponsored service club for young people ages 14-18 from Dublin, Valley Christian and Valley High Schools. The program gives young people an opportunity to participate in fun, meaningful service projects while developing leadership skills and meeting new friends. Local projects include collecting food for local needy families, providing holiday parties for under privileged families, recycling, and conducting the Relay for Life benefiting the American Cancer Society. 3. Adoptinq Dublin Schools: This past year Rotarians completed renovation/beautification at Murray Elementary School. Rotary is now beginning to develop a project at Valley High School. 4. Assist Other Non-Profit Oraanizations: In 2006, Dublin Rotary partnered with the Wells Band, the Dublin Youth Soccer League, the Dublin Unity Church and the Boy Scouts in assisting with many projects. 5. Establish Dave Burton Memorial Scholarship: Dublin Rotary is working with the family of long-time Rotarian Dave Burton to honor his memory with scholarships for Dublin youth. 6. Serve Other Local Groups: For several years, Rotary has sponsored the awards dinner at the annual Agape Villages golf fundraiser, Dublin Rotary made a $5,000 contribution to the Women's Club for purchase of Defibulators for local emergency response providers. A Dublin Rotarian is currently the chair of the DPIE Board of Directors. Also, Dublin Rotary shipped $100,000 worth of supplies and equipment collected by the Dublin School District to Louisiana for Katrina relief Dublin Rotary recognizes and rewards Students of the Month for each of the three Dublin High Schools. Every week, Dublin Rotary donates one book in the speaker's name to the Dublin High School library. 7. International Recoanition for Dublin: While working on the Murray project, Rotary learned that each year local schools rid themselves of surplus schoolbooks. Dublin Rotary spearheaded another effort that sent surplus schoolbooks to foreign countries. The Rotary Club of Dublin is proud to submit this nomination to become the City of Dublin Organization of the Year for 2006. 3 ... Dlrrirtg the past year, the Dublin Historic Preservation Association (DHP A) has carried-out a broad spectrum of programs that have benefited the City of Dublin and its residents. In 2006, the DHPA undertook several major activities in addition to its ongoing support for the Dublin Heritage Center, Camp Parks History Center and the City of Dublin. The following are examples of some of the ways the DHPA is improving Dublin's quality oflife. In the past year, DHPA has demonstrated leadership and innovation with its involvement with the Dublin Heritage Center's new exhibit. DHPA fully sponsored a new archive library which provides a quiet, comfortable spot to read, (complete with leather reading chair and mission style oak furniture). DHP A also provided community leadership and organized a Gala Grand Opening Party to preview the exhibit. DHP A was able to mobilize the volunteers and garnered donations to underwrite all of the costs. The event raised funds and generated community excitement about the new exhibit. In 2006, DHP A took the innovative step and fully funded the production of at short video that gives the history of Dublin in an entertaining and enlightening way. This video provides visitors with an orientation prior to viewing the exhibit. Evaluation indicates that the video greatly enhances the visitor's experience and the educational value of a museum visit. In the past year, DHP A supported several Eagle Scout Projects at the Dublin Heritage Center. This community partnership directly benefits the museum and all its visitors. DHP A provided the scouts with funding to purchase supplies and carry-out the project. One of the most notable projects was the rehabilitation of an old barn. Installation of the new exhibit left some artifacts without display space. Together, the DHP A, Heritage Center staff and the Boy Scouts of America swiftly resolved the problem. An old barn was cleaned and adapted to create a nice outdoor exhibit space which will house tools, farm equipment and a carriage In the past year, the Dublin Heritage Center underwent the Museum Assessment Program sponsored by the American Association of Museums. DHPA members diligently attended meetings and provided valuable input and historical expertise. The resulting report speaks very favorably about the DHP A, their generosity, and their ability to work with community organizations. DHP A continues to be involved in the MAP process and is helping to set the course for the Dublin Heritage Center. In the past year, the DHP A supported the Heritage Center by providing volunteers for and refreshments to the public at the Winter Concert Series and the Family History Day. DHP A is underwriting costs associated with an upcoming book about Dublin. That book is slated to be available for sale by Day on the Glen in September 2007. Additionally, DHPA provided input and guidance for the Historic Park Master Plan. Finally, the DHP A has been able to mobilize support for a number of other community endeavors. DHP A purchased art which raised $500 for the Dublin Library. DHP A was active in Dublin Pride and mobilized an enthusiastic team to pitch-in. DHPA again mobilized volunteers to help cook for the Pancake Breakfast at the Dublin Senior Center. In the past year DHP A has provided leadership, innovation and mobilize volunteers to effectively emiched life in Dublin.
