FIN..<\NCIAL STATEMENT:
Acceptance of gift will increase avaliable funding for drug
resistance education program without additional costs to the
City.
DESCRIPTION: .
The Altamont Cruisers is a 10-year-old organization composed of classic car aficionados. The group is
based in Livermore, but is composed of members from the entire Tri-Valley area. The group periodically
holds car shows and other social events at various Tri-Valley locations. The purpose of1?ese events is to
display classic cars and to generate revenues, through fees and donations, for local charitable
organizations and city~sponsored drug abuse resistance education programs. The group's motto is
"Cruisers Against Drugs".
On August 20, 1997, the Altamont Cruisers held a car show in Dublin at the Foster's Freeze restaurant
located on Amador Valley Boulevard. The event generated a total of$t,OOO in profits and donations.
The Altamont Cruisers have offered to donate these funds to the City of Dublin, provided that the funds
are used to eI1ha:Dce or expand the City~s drug abuse resistance education program.
/
Dublin Police Services currently operates an aggressive and proactive drug education program which is
primarily directed towards Dublin's primary schools and high school. The program utilizes one sworn
crime prevention officer. The crime prevention officer makes numerous presentations to the schools and
to various organizations. Typically, drug abuse resistance brochures and promotional materials are
distributed. at these presentations. Acceptance of this gift would enable Police Services to buy additional
promotional and educational materials.
Staff recommends that the City Council accept the gift, approve th~ budget adjustment, direct staff to
formally acknowledge the donor, and direct Police Services staff to use the funds to enhance the City's
existing drug abuse education program.
