DESCRIPTION: At the October 3, 2006 meeting, the City Council approved the
contract with Callander Associates, Landscape Architects to prepare the design and construction
documents for the two-acre neighborhood square in Dublin Ranch, Area G located at the corner of
Chancery Way and Finnian Way (see Attachment 1). A public meeting for the surrounding
neighborhoods was held on December 13, 2006 to solicit input and ideas from potential park users. Based
on these comments and the City's program from the Parks and Recreation Master Plan Callander
Associates prepared three conceptual design alternatives.
Representatives from the Callander Associates presented the three Conceptual Design Alternatives for the
Area G Neighborhood Square at the January 22, 2007 meeting of the Parks and Community Services
Commission. These included; Concept A- Spherical Intersections, Concept B- Movement and Concept
C- Garden Rooms. Descriptions of the concepts are discussed below.

Concept A - Spherical Intersections (Attachment 2)
A variety of pathways will lead the park visitor to the park's central circular plaza with labyrinth paving,
water play and a cluster of trees offering shade. From there the visitor will be able to relax on the benches
and picnic tables and view the large turf area, shaded promenade path and perennial planting bands that
would change color and texture with each season. The same change in color and texture would be
experienced underfoot with the use of different paving materials from various concrete finishes, to
interlocking pavers, to decomposed granite paving and the use of fall attenuation material within the play
area. From the main plaza the user would also have full supervision of the play area sheltered by a band of
columnar trees and enclosed on one side with planting and a low rail fence. The view to the southwest
would look on to a small informal rose garden with seating. The entire park will be encompassed by a
back drop of street trees that would match the fabric of the surrounding neighborhood of Dublin Ranch.
Concept B - Movement (Attachment 3)
Every element of this design in intended to reflect movement and includes flowing grasses, curvilinear
seat walls, a sculptural arbor, and labyrinth. The park focuses on to the Dublin Ranch retail area with a
central plaza and informal seating. The center of the plaza could include a sculptural arbor creating a
shaded gathering area and informal stage for events. (This arbor was based on public input but is not
included in the budget and could be a potential art project in the future.) On either side of the main plaza
would be smaller, less formal, seating areas defined by curved seat walls providing seating for future retail
and bike path users. Adjacent to the arbor will be the children's play area which will be slightly depressed
and surrounded by an ornamental grass mound and trees and shaded seating for parents. A brick ribbon
labyrinth and open turf areas complete the plan.
Concept C - Garden Rooms (Attachment 4)
The varying sizes of the plaza areas will encourage use by individuals and small groups. The basis of this
concept is that individuals and small groups will want more intimate gathering spaces or "rooms". Each
one of these rooms would be defined by unique themed plantings (rose garden, lavender garden, etc.).
The two gardens located near the future retail center include decomposed granite surfacing, informal
seating and small picnic tables. A central plaza with icon (possible art project) and arbor provides the
focus for the park and creates a stage for small events that can be viewed from the turf amphitheater.
Finally the play area with a raised mound with rubberized surfacing and a variety of play equipment will
provide engaging play for small children in the area.
Upon receiving public input and deliberating the Commission endorsed a Preferred Alternative generally
based on Concept A - Spherical Intersections. Further the Commission recommended that the designer
investigate the addition of a vine covered trellis for shade (currently not within the budget), create an
informal performance area and amphitheater for small events, and include the brick ribbon labyrinth in the
open turf areas to complete the plan.
The Landscape Architect prepared a Preferred Alternative design plan (Attachment 5) incorporating the
comments and direction from the meeting. The Preferred Alternative plan was presented at the February
21, 2007 meeting of the Parks and Community Services Commission. The Commission received public
input and unanimously voted to recommend the Preferred Alternative to the City Council.
As the current plan is more than the available Construction Budget of $526,000 Staff and the Landscape
Architect are investigating cost reduction options for the park to bring it in line with the current budget.
One of these options may include the use of salvaged pavers from prior City projects for the brick ribbon
labyrinth and plaza areas. In addition Staff would recommend bidding the Trellis as an Additive Bid item.

RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends that the City Council take the following action;
receive report, receive public comment, approve Preferred Alternative and authorize Staff to prepare
Construction Documents.
