AGENDA STATEMENT CITY COUNCIL MEETING DATE: December 17,1996 SUBJECT: Distribution of City Song "Dublin Town" Report Prepared by Kay Keele, City Clerk EXHIBITS ATTACHED: None RECOMMENDATION: 1;~ Consider options and provide appropriate direction to Staff FINANCIAL STATEMENT: To be determined DESCRIPTION: During Budget deliberations on June 27, 1996, the City Council approved the expenditure of $5,000 for the professional recording and production of "Dublin Town". This Steve King Stewart song was the winner of the City song contest and was designated as the City's official anthem in February of 1993. On Sunday, November 24, 1996, a group of approximately 75 people gathered in the Council Chambers to record the melody. Since that time, Steve Stewart has been working on the production mix and to finalize the recording. Once completed, the City will receive 1,000 cassette copies of the song. Side A of the tape will be a full recording and Side B will contain an instrumental only arrangement of the song without vocals. Since inception, the stated purpose or goal behind this project has been to unite the . community. If the Council wishes to recoup all or a portion of the $5,000 outlay for this project, a marketing plan will need to be developed. It should be pointed out that Staff lacks expertise in this particular area. The overall goal is to make the tapes available to the community through as many legitimate sources as possible. If recouping the original outlay is not the main focus, one option which could be considered would be to make a specific number of tapes available, upon request, to Dublin based non-profit groups. Each group could then utilize the tapes for fund-raising purposes for their own organization. Since the song is timeless, a supply could be maintained by the City Clerk for sale to employees and/or the general public from this point forward. Staff would generally anticipate heavier requests for copies of the song at certain times of the year such as during the St. Patrick's Day Celebration, during Dublin Pride Week and potentially during the Dublins of America Convention being planned by the Dublin Sister City Association to occur in October of 1998. Any monies received for tapes sold through the City Clerk's Office would be deposited into the General Fund.. Additionally, gift cassettes could be presented on occasion such as to groups touring the Civic Center or other occasions as deemed appropriate by Council or Staff. Staff recommends that the Council discuss the distribution options for the City song and provide appropriate direction. . ------------------------------------------------------------------- COPIES TO: Steve Stewart lTEMNO.~ K2/GIl2-17-96/as-song.doc
