HomeMy WebLinkAboutItem 3.1 ProclWomanSuffrage 1-1 ~ z o ::!! r- m () - -f 6'-< .......n .- C)m :D " I I I , , , I I I , I I , , , I , , I I , , , I , , , , , , , , , , , , , , I I , , I , n: 01 "'t:I' ttii en , , ....,: 9: I , I , I I , , , , I , , , , , I , , , , , , , I , , , , , , , , I , , , , I , i t , , I , , WHEREAS, women today are able to fully participate in the governance of the United States because of the women suffrage movement, a courageous and persistent political campaign which lasted 72 years; and WHEREAS, women were a poor, unarmed and disenfranchised class when they first organized to gain political power in the mid-1800s; and WHEREAS, tens of thousands of women and men, inspired by idealism and grounded in sacrifice, gave the accumulated possibilities of entire lifetimes to the cauSe of women suffrage; and WHEREAS, these visionaries conducted 56 campaigns of referenda to male voters; 480 legislative campaigns; 47 campaigns to influence State constitutional conventions; 277 campaigns at State party conventions for women suffrage planks; and 19 campaigns with 19 successive National Congresses. NOvy, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOL VED that I, Guy S. Houston, Mayor of Dublin, do hereby acknowledge July, 1995 as 'WOMEN SUFFRAGE DIAMOND JUBILEE MONTH" in the City of Dublin.
