Volunteer Day
Over 90 community volunteers donated significant time and energy to community clean up and
beautification projects on Volunteer Day, Saturday April 28th. Volunteers met at 8:00 a.m. at Mape
Memorial Park to receive instructions and supplies for the various projects throughout the community.
Mayor Lockhart began the event with a welcoming address and word of thanks to the volunteers. All
volunteers were given Dublin Pride Week t-shirts and were provided snacks, juice and water including
muffins donated by Mimi's Cafe.
At the completion of the projects, all volunteers were invited to a free barbecue provided by the Dublin
Lion's Club. Volunteer Day consisted ofthe following projects:
Senior Projects: There were over 40 volunteers that made up the thirteen separate Senior Project Teams.
The teams were able to assist 16 senior homes with a variety of activities that ranged from cleaning
windows to minor home repair.
Heritage Center: Approximately 10 volunteers from the Youth Advisory Committee raked, pulled weeds,
and engaged in other beautification activities at the Heritage Center.
Dublin High School and Wells Middle School Projects: Volunteers assisted in planting new vegetation in
planters' boxes at both sites. Approximately 30 volunteers participated in these activities.
Storm Drain Medallions: An additional 10 volunteers were engaged in pasting medallions to the City's
storm drains, which warn against dumping material into the storm drain system.
Canned Food Drive: This year, Dublin Pride Week included a Canned Food Drive. Volunteers collected
donations at the City's two Safeways as part of Volunteer Day. In addition, Dublin High School
conducted a canned food drive throughout the week, which resulted in a significant contribution to the
overall collection activity. All food collected was donated to the Alameda County Food Bank.
It should be noted that Dublin resident Karen Shaddy volunteered to be a part of the Dublin Pride Week
Committee this year and played a major role in organizing the volunteer day events and soliciting
volunteers from local church groups.
Nature Day
Tassajara Creek Nature Walk: Following the Volunteer Day Activities on April 28th, naturalist and park
ranger Katie Colbert lead a nature walk along the Tassajara Creek Trail exploring the creek's diverse flora
and fauna. Approximately 10 people participated in the walk.
Lindsey Wildlife Presentation: Following the Nature Walk, two representatives from the Lindsey Wildlife
Museum gave a wildlife presentation, displaying a vulture, owl, and snake. It also provided educational
information on each animal's physical attributes and natural lifestyle.
Water-wise Workshop: Residents went to the Armstrong Garden Center for an informational workshop on
drought tolerant gardening.
