The Business Area Street Number Sign project would provide for the installation of 51 block number signs in medians and in the parkways throughout the commercial district. The City Engineer has prepared the plans and specifications necessary to go to bid for both projects (see attached). Before authorizing Staff to proceed with the bid process, there is an alternate type of street name sign which the City Council may wish to consider. In lieu of installing reflective street name signs from the traffic signal mast arms, the Council may wish to consider installing internally lit street name signs, similar to those recently installed on Hopyard Road in Pleasanton. The additional cost of installing the internally lit sign would be approximately $26,000, and would require an additional appropriation of $26,000 from the City's Street Improvement Reserve. This would bring the total street name and approach sign project cost to $43,000. It is Staff's position that the aluminum reflectorized signs as originally proposed are adequate and are a great improvement for motorists unfamiliar -ith the City. However, the internally lit signs are more visible and _mprove the appearance of the intersection. ALTERNATIVES Determine if plans and specifications should be modified to provide for internally lit street name signs. If so desired, an additional appropriation of $26,000 from the City's Street Improvement Reserve should be authorized. Authorize Staff to alter plans and proceed with bid process with bid opening date of Mcnday, January 8, 1983 at I0:00 2. Authorize Staff to go to bid for project as originally proposed with bid opening date of Monday, December 5, 1983 at 10:00 a_m. COPIES TO: ITEM NO.
