CITY COUNCIL MEETING DATE: September 4, 2007
SUBJECT:
Park Names
Report by Diane Lowart, Parks & Community Services Director
ATTACHMENTS:
1. Suggested Park Names in Alphabetical Order
2. Area Map, Thompson and West, 1878, Official and Historical
Atlas of Alameda County
RECOMMENDATION: ~ Select Names for Area G and Area F Parks
I)v. ~
FINANCIAL STATEMENT: None
DESCRIPTION: At the May 1, 2007 meeting of the City Council, Staff requested
direction from the City Council in the naming of future parks within the City. The impetus behind this
request was the fact that there were two parks in various stages of development; Area F Neighborhood
Square is under construction and Area G Neighborhood Square is out to bid with construction to begin in
fall 2007. Area F Neighborhood Park is also budgeted to begin this Fiscal Year. Consequently it is
necessary to determine names for these future parks.
The City Council concurred that they wanted to continue naming parks as the City had done in the past,
i.e. have the Parks & Community Services Commission forward three names for consideration, and look
at the possibility of adding a facet to the process by using the website to include resident input.
In keeping with City Council direction, Staff established a link on the City's website whereby names
could be suggested by the public. The following information was given for the three parks where names
were being sought.
Area G Neighborhood Square: A two acre neighborhood square that is located in the Villages at Dublin
Ranch Development. It is bordered by Finnian Way, Chancery Lane and Parnell Way and will be located
adjacent to a future commercial shopping area called The Promenade.

Area F Parks: Two parks located in the Sorrento at Dublin Ranch Development. The development is
influenced by Italianate design in its architecture, landscape and site amenities.
Neighborhood Square: a two acre neighborhood square that is bordered by A viano Way, Palermo
Way and Capoterra Way. It is adjacent to the Passotasso Recreation Center, a private center for the
residents of the development.
Neighborhood Park: a five acre neighborhood park that is bordered by Araldi Place, Palermo Way
and Capoterra Way. It is adjacent to the future Kolb Elementary School.
The nomination period for park names lasted for three weeks. During that time, 69 e-mails were received
and one letter. There were 123 suggestions; 92 names and 31 duplicates. Attachment one shows the
suggested park names in alphabetical order. Comments as to why a specific name was suggested are also
included on the table. Where the nominator suggested a name for a specific park, it is identified;
otherwise the names could be applicable to any of the three parks. The list could also be used for the
naming of future parks.
The Parks and Community Services Commission considered names for the three parks at its August 20,
2007 meeting. For the Area F Parks, the Commission recommends park names in keeping with the
Italianate theme and proposes the following names:
Area F Neighborhood Square - Piazza Sorrento (public square)
Area F Neighborhood Park - Bello Campo (beautiful field)
Passatempo (pastime)
For the Area G Neighborhood Square, the Commission recommends either a name with an Irish theme
(Clover Park or Clover Square) or a name of an historical figure (Devany Park or Devany Square). As
shown in Attachment 2, one of the original landowners in the vicinity of Area G was M. Devaney.
According to the book "Images of America - Dublin", Michael Devany immigrated from Roscommon,
Ireland in the late 1840's and arrived in San Francisco in 1852. He moved his family to Dougherty's
Station in 1858. He purchased two plots ofland and became a farmer. He passed away in 1890 and is
buried in the Dublin Pioneer Cemetery. According to Mike Lynch who is the great-grandson of Michael
Devany, records from the late 1800's are not consistent when it comes to the name of Devany. Some end
with the letter "y" and others end with "ey". His research has shown that the "y" spelling is the correct
one. Consequently if it is the desire of the Council to use the name Devany, it is recommended that it be
spelled with "y".
In addition to the recommendations of the Parks & Community Services Commission and the suggested
park names from the public, the City Council may also want to consider the following general guidelines
when determining the names for the parks:
· Name reflects the geographic location of the facility (neighborhood/development, major street or
regional area of the City)
· Name reflects a prominent form oftopography, or a prominent plant, bush or tree
· Name reflects the history of the facility (family name ofthe builder, developer, or person who donated
the land)
· Name recognizes a significant contributor to the advancement of the City (former Mayor,
Councilmember, Board/Commission Member, etc.)
RECOMMENDATION:
and Area F Parks.
Staff recommends that the City Council select names for the Area G
