CITY OF DUBLIN AGENDA STATEMENT CITY COUNCIL MEETING DATE: March 8, 1993 SUBJECT: Resolution Adopting "Dublin Town" (Melody and Lyrics by steve King stewart, Copyright 1993), as the Official Song of the city of DUbli~1t~ (Report Prepared by Kay Keck, City Clerk)C-Jl/ EXHIBITS ATTACHED: Resolution Copy of Proclamation Presented March 3, 1993 RECOMMENDATION:~~do~t Resolution FINANCIAL STATEMENT: None DESCRIPTION: At the City Council meeting of February 22, 1993, six people/groups performed original songs composed in response to the City song contest. The song, "Dublin Town" written and performed by steve King stewart, received the highest number of points by the City Council and was thus declared the winner of the contest. staff was directed to prepare the appropriate mechanism which would officially adopt "Dublin Town" as the City'S official song. As part of a recognition event sponsored by Mr. stewart's employer, Micro Dental Laboratories and a group of his co-workers, a City proclamation was prepared and presented on March 3, 1993. A Resolution has been prepared in accordance with Council direction, and Staff recommends that the City Council adopt said Resolution. The lyrics are contained in Exhibit A and a musical score and finished tape (when available) will be included as Exhibits Band C, to be maintained as official City documents by the City Clerk's Office. --------------------------------------~~------------~-~--------------- ITEM NO. .!j. , COPIES TO: Steve King stewart 01 TYC L E R K IFILE~ . . RESOLUTION NO. - 93 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF DUBLIN **..*........... ADOPTING STEVE KING STEWART'S "DUBLIN TOWN" AND THE OFFICIAL SONG FOR THE CITY OF DUBLIN WHEREAS, on December 4, 1992, a conversation took place between strangers waiting in line to board a flight home from the San Diego Airport; and WHEREAS, said conversation included facts that Steve King Stewart worked in Dublin, and that Kay Keck worked for the City of Dublin; and WHEREAS, Mr. Stewart advised that he had written official songs for several communities and expressed a desire to give the City of Dublin a musical identity; and WHEREAS, Mr. Stewart was advised to approach the city Council with his offer to write a city Song; and WHEREAS, the City council found the idea intriguing, and directed Staff to advertise that the City would hold a contest; and WHEREAS, on February 22, 1993, six people and/or groups competed for the honor of having their song selected as the City'S official song; and WHEREAS, contestants included: 1) Claudia McCormick & John Fullard; 2) Pam Hanna; 3) Tim Sandoli; 4) Dan Downey; 5) Chuck Morrish & Linda Schmidt; and 6) Steve King Stewart; and WHEREAS, the City Council ranked each performance on a 1 to 10 scale; and WHEREAS, the City Council was extremely pleased by the enthusiasm displayed by all contestants, and impressed by the quality of the various songs; and WHEREAS, receiving the highest numerical ranking of the six performances (40 points), Steve King Stewart's song "Dublin Town" was declared the winner of the city Song contest. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the city council of the City of Dublin does hereby adopt the song "Dublin Town", melody and lyrics by Steve King Stewart, Copyright 1993, as the official song of the City of Dublin; and . . BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the lyrics are contained in Exhibit A, attached hereto and made a part of this Resolution. The musical score to be provided when complete is hereby incorporated by reference as Exhibit B, and a finished tape shall be provided and is hereby incorporated by reference as Exhibit c. ExftWitA . . . A PROCLAMATION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF DUBLIN WHEREAS, STEVE KING STEWART HAS PROVEN THAT HE IS A MAN OF MANY TALENTS; AND WHEREAS, MR. STEWART HAS MAINTAINED HIS STRONG TIES TO THE CITY OF DUBLIN THROUGH HIS EMPLOYMENT WITH MICRO DENTAL LABORATORIES; AND WHEREAS, MR. STEWART EXPRESSED TO THE DUBLIN CITY COUNCIL, HIS DESIRE TO WRITE AN OFFICIAL CITY SONG: AND WHEREAS, MR. STEWART WILLINGLY AND WITH ENTHUSIASM ACCEPTED THE CITY COUNCIL'S CHALLENGE TO OPEN THE CITY SONG UP TO A CONTEST: AND WHEREAS, MR. STEWART WORKED VERY HARD TO OBTAIN DETAILED AND APPROPRIATE INFORMATION TO CAPTURE THE TRUE FLAVOR OF OUR COMMUNITY: AND WHEREAS, MR. STEWART WAS CHALLENGED BY FIVE VERY STIFF COMPETITORS: AND WHEREAS, MR. STEWART, BY APPROACHING THE CITY COUNCIL WITH HIS IDEA OF A CITY SONG, PROVIDED A VERY ENJOYABLE DIVERSION DURING A TIME WHEN MOST SUBJECTS ROUTINELY DISCUSSED BY THE CITY COUNCIL ARE MUCH MORE SOMBER: AND WHEREAS, MR. STEWART'S SONG, "DUBLIN TOWN" RECEIVED THE HIGHEST NUMBER OF POINTS IN THE COMPETITION: AND WHEREAS, "DUBLIN TOWN" TRULY CAPTURES THE PERSONALITY OF THE CITY OF DUBLIN AND SURELY WILL BE SUNG BY YOUNG AND OLD ALIKE FOR MANY YEARS TO COME. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT I, PETER W. SNYDER, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF DUBLIN, ON BEHALF OF THE DUBLIN CITY COUNCIL, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM WEDNESDAY, MARCH 3, 1993, AS "STEVE KING STEWART DAY" IN THE CITY OF DUBLIN. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT I URGE ALL RESIDENTS, NEIGHBORS AND FRIENDS TO ATTEND THE ST. PATRICK'S DAY FESTIVITIES SCHEDULED IN DUBLIN ON SATURDAY, MARCH 13, 1993, AT WHICH TIME MR.
