Kick-Off Con cert
At the Parks and Community Services Commission meeting on September 20, 1999, the Commission
recommended to the City Council that a Classical Music Concert should be held as a kick-off event for
the annual Summer Concert Series. At their meeting on October 19, 1999, the City Councilmembers
concurred with the Commission and directed Staff to investigate the feasibility of hosting a classical
music concert prior to the annual Summer Concert Series.
Staff evaluated the Civic Center site and has concluded that it would be feasible to hold this type event of
in the Courtyard and lobby. The concert could be held on a Saturday evening in late June or early July
each year. The target audience for this event would be adults. The entertainment would feature a live
symphony orchestra playing variety of songs relating to a different theme each year. Staff would recruit a
local symphony group, such as the Tassajara Symphony Orchestra to perform at the event. In addition to

the entertainment, the event would begin with a wine and cheese tasting featuring local wineries. In order
to keep the ticket cost reasonable, Staffwould be need to secure sponsors for the event including cash and
media sponsors, wineries, and a caterer.
However, with only three months remaining until the 2000 Summer Concert Series, there is not enough
lead-time to secure sponsors and plan a successful event. Also, there are not funds available in the Fiscal
Year 1999-2000 Budget for the event or Staff resources available to coordinate this event. Therefore, it is
recommended that a "Kick-Off' Concert be deferred for this year and that funds be included in the Fiscal
Year 2000-2001 Budget for the event.
In conclusion, it is the recommendation of Staffthat the City Council take the following action:
Approve the 2000 Concert Series as presented (without the "Kick-Off" Concert)
Direct Staff to include funding in the Fiscal Year 2000-2001 Budget for a "Kick-Off' Concert
prior to the 2001 Concert Series
