DESCRIPTION:
At the time that the Amador Valley Blvd. Rehabilitation project was
designed, bid, and awarded, the Southern Pacific railroad tracks were not
scheduled to be removed for quite some time; consequently, the design of the
project allowed for the tracks to remain in place, with reconstruction of this
area to be accomplished at a later date.
Southern Pacific has, however, begun removal of the tracks and ties from
their right-of-way in Dublin ahead of schedule, and it is possible to
accomplish reconstruction in this area at a savings to the City if it is done
by the contractor presently on the site.
This work includes removal of curb returns on each side of the track,
construction of new curb, gutter, and sidewalk, embankment behind the
sidewalk, and the installation of a leveling course of asphalt concrete to
insure proper drainage. The existing opening'in the median would be closed
with new curb and paver stones.
Staff has received a cost figure for the improvements from Oliver De
Silva on the basis that the work would be included in the current project in
the form of a change order. This cost, $17,500, has been reviewed by Staff
and found to be equitable. The estimated cost of doing this work as a
separate job at a later date is $25,000. If the work is to be done as part of
the current contract, it must be done very soon, as the overlay portion of the
job is scheduled to be done in approximately two weeks.
Staff recommends that the extra work be authorized at this time in order
to accomplish a cost savings and in order to preserve the continuity of the
project.
