FINANCIAL STATEMENT: None DESCRIPTION: The Tri-Valley Council, comprised of representatives from the cities of Dublin, Danville, San Ramon, Pleasanton, and Livermore are attempting to create a uniform smoking ordinance for all cities in the Tri-Valley. The Council is focusing on mitigating adverse impacts created by smoking restrictions placed on businesses. At the September 27, 1993 City Council meeting, staff was directed to distribute a survey through the Chamber of Commerce newsletter relating to smoking pollution control. The intent of the survey was to determine the business communities attitude on strengthening the Smoking Pollution Control Ordinance. Through the Tri-Valley Council representatives, all the Valley cities are currently deliberating on this same issue. The City of Pleasanton has adopted the American Lung Association Model Ordinance. The cities of Danville, San Ramon and Livermore do not have any action scheduled at this time. However, San Ramon has indicated the issue is likely to be deferred until the new City Council assume their seats in late November. It was originally anticipated that the survey would be distributed via the Chamber of Commerce Newsletter in early October and results would be available at this meeting. However, distribution of the survey was delayed until October 14. Of the over 350 surveys mailed, only 38 have been received. , Additionally, the Chamber of Commerce will be holding discussions related to the Smoking Ordinance on November 6 and has requested the City defer the issue to allow the Chamber sufficient time to present its position to the City. Therefore, it appears prudent to table City Council deliberations on this item to a later Council meeting when the survey information and Chamber of Commerce position is known. COPIES TO: ITEM NO.
