HomeMy WebLinkAbout8.1 St Pats Day Float c~rY CLERK FIle # D~[~1tQ}~ AGENDA STATEMENT CITY COUNCIL MEETING DATE February 5, 2008 SUBJECT St Patnck's Day Parade Float Report Prepared by Roger Bradley Administrative Analyst ATTACHMENTS None RECOMMENDA'fIO~ ConsIder alternatIves for the 2008 CIty CouncIl St Patnck's Day parade entry and prOVIde dIrectIOn to staff FINANCIAL STATEMENT SufficIent funds are avaIlable m the FIscal Year 2007/2008 budget to cover the float expenses DESCRIPTION Dunng the 1999 St PatrIck's Day Parade, Staff coord mated a float entry for the CIty CouncIl The CIty CouncIl's float consIsted of a flat bed truck wIth straw for seats, sIgnage, a balloon arch and festIve decoratIOns The CIty Manager drove the truck along the parade route The Year 2000 Parade entry mcluded decorated golf carts for CIty CouncIlmembers Staff representatIves drove the golf carts and CouncIlmembers dIstnbuted small gIve-a-ways (from the Pnde Week celebratIOn) to the crowds along the parade route The golf carts had sIgnage mdIcatmg the CIty CouncIl person Dunng the years 2001 through 2003, the CIty CouncIl rode together m a float SImIlar to the Year 1999 entry, m the year 2002, the float was decorated m a 20th AnnIversary theme m celebratIOn of the CIty'S annIversary Dunng 2004, 2005 and 2006, the CIty CouncIl rode together m Alameda County's AntIque FIre Truck WIth the Alameda County FIre ChIef as the dnver of the vehIcle DecoratIOns and sIgnage were added to the hIstonc vehIcle m keepmg WIth the parade theme As part of the CIty's 25th AnnIversary celebratIons m 2007, the City CouncIl elected to have a float decorated WIth a bIrthday cake m commemoratIOn of the Important mIlestone In preparmg for the Year 2008 Parade, Staff would lIke to offer several alternatIves for the CouncIl to conSIder when planrung theIr CouncIl float entry Antique Cars Each CouncIlmember would nde m an antIque car CouncIlmembers could rIde alone or select a guest to rIde WIth them The selected Car Club would proVide the dnver of the vehIcle There would be sIgnage on each vehIcle IdentIfymg the nder(s) COpy 1'0 li1'lEM NO J' I C-r Page I of2 r \Councll\Agcnda Statcments\2007 2008\2008 City CounCIl Float doc 2 Alameda County's Antique Fire Truck The CouncIl could request use of the AntIque Fife Truck, as was done dunng past parades FIre ChIef GIlbert would dnve the vehIcle or If unavaIlable an alternate could serve as the dnver Appropnate decoratIOns and slgnage would be mcluded In thIS alternatIve Staff has been assured that pnor techmcal dIfficultIes WIth the vehIcle hdve been resolved The Anttque Fire Truck has been used successfully In recent parade events (2006) WIthIn Alameda County 3 Golf Carts CouncIlmembers would be able to dnve alone or buddy-up m rented golf carts that would be decorated for the occaSIOn CouncIlmembers could dnve or be dnven along the parade route There would be front and back sIgnage on each cart IdentIfymg the nder(s) ThIS alternatIve IS SImIlar to a pnor entry 4 City Council Float CouncIlmembers would nde together In a float that IS theme decorated WIth sIgnage ThIS alternatIve IS SImIlar to a pnor entry 5 Walkmg/Other Alternative CouncIlmembers would walk the parade route together FestIve balloons and sIgnage would be developed for tills alternatIve The CIty CouncIl may have other alternatIves that are feaSIble for the parade entry A modest budget IS aVaIlable for the float entry and for small Item glve-a-ways to the crowds along the parade route In the past, all CouncIl floats have been prepared the day before/of the parade by CIty Staff RECOMMEN][)ATION ConSIder alternatIves for the 2008 CIty CounCIl St Patnck's Day parade entry and proVIde dIrectIOn to staff Page 2 of2
