DESCRIPTION:
This project is the second phase of the upgrading of the park and recreation
facilities at Shannon Park. The first phase was renovation of the Shannon
Center building. That project is just now being completed. This phase,
renovation of the park, includes play areas for both young and older
children, a shallow pond and spray pool, a plaza area and fountain,
landscaping and drainage improvements, an additional pedestrian bridge over
the creek, and parking and lighting improvements.
The master plan for this park was approved in 1986 by the City Council after
public hearings at Park and Recreation Commission and at City Council
meetings. The design development plan was reviewed by the City Council on
April 10, 1989, with instructions to complete the plans based on the
schematic drawings.
The landscape architect, Beals/Lechner, has incorporated several alternates
in the proposed bid so that, should the bid be over the amount budgeted, the
City Council may delete certain items for installation at a later date.
These items include a railroad-tie path under the existing pedestrian bridge
to the Shannon Center, the new pedestrian bridge over the creek, and the
demonstration garden behind the Shannon Center.
The park portion of the site will be fenced off for approximately six months
during construction, with the Shannon Center remaining open for City and
rental uses.
