RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL
OF THE CITY OF DUBLIN
COMMEMORATING THE TENTH ANNIVERSARY
OF SERVICE OF THE
SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA RAPID TRANSIT DISTRICT
(BART)
WHEREAS, the San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District was created by
the State Legislature in 1957; and
WHEREAS, the voters and taxpayers of the three bay area counties---Alameda,
Contra Costa, and the City and County of San Francisco---in November 1965 joined
together to build the 75 mile San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit system project;
and
WHEREAS, on September ll, 1972, the fully automated train system began
providing regular service; and
WHEREAS, since the new system began operation, BART has carried 350 million
passengers, traveling more than 4.5 billion passenger miles, without a passenger
fatality; and
WHEREAS, BART has been a major factor in the economic growth of the bay area
since it has become a vital link in the public transit network of the bay area; and
WHEREAS, today BART is carrying over 190,000 passengers every working day,
which includes 30 percent of all transbay commuters, thus relieving congestion on
our freeways, bridges and downtown parking areas by some 60,000 cars; and
WHEREAS, the BART Express Buses, each week, make a total of 1,021 runs from
Dublin which connect with BART at the Hayward BART Station, or the Bay Fair BART
Station, or the Walnut Creek BART Station; and
WHEREAS, based on today's projections, more than 250,000 passengers will be
using BART by 1985-86, and over 300,000 passengers by the end of the decade; and
WHEREAS, BART has embarked on an intensive $285 million capital program,
designed to increase the capacity of the system, through the purchase of a new
generation of BART designed cars, expanding the capability of the system's auto-
matic train control system to operate more trains and to improve the system's
ability to reduce the time between trains.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City of Dublin does first commend
the vision and wisdom of the voters of the three BART counties, the owners of
BART, for taking the initial steps which brought BART into being; and

Dear Mayor Snyder:
As you know, BART on September ll will mark 10 years
of service to the bay area. We hope you will consider
the possibility of sponsoring a resolution from yourself
and the Dublin City Council commemorating this anniver-
sary. I have taken the liberty of preparing the attached
draft resolution which you might wish to use in the
development of a resolution from your community. Any
assistance you might give us in this project would be
sincerely appreciated.
i hope your schedule will permit you to be present at BART's
10th anniversary-celebration ceremonies to be held here on
the plaza green at our headquarters building in Oakland,
Monday, September 13, 1982, at 11:00 a.m.
Sincerely,
Robert S. Allen
Director, District #5
