HERITAGE AND CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION
CITY OF DUBLIN
December 11, 2008
The December 11, 2008 meeting of the Heritage and Cultural Arts Commission was called to order at
7:00 p.m. at the Dublin Civic Center, Dublin, California, by Chair Swalwell.
PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE
Chair Swalwell led the Pledge of Allegiance.

ORAL COMMUNICATIONS - None
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
On a motion by Cm. Acuff, seconded by Cm. Mack, and by a vote of 6-0-0 with Cm. Halket absent, the
Commission voted to approve the minutes of November 13, 2008 as presented.

NEW BUSINESS
8.1 Poet Laureate/City Historian Update
Mr. John Hartnett, Heritage and Cultural Arts Manager, presented the specifics of the item as outlined in
the Staff Report.
Ms. Ronnie Holland discussed her future goals as Poet Laureate for 2009.
Cm. Acuff asked if she plans to work with Dublin High School on their yearbook or newsletter; or the
Dublin Senior Center Newsletter on publishing poetry in either publication. Ms. Holland stated that she
and Staff would consider the idea.
Cm. Vonheeder-Leopold discussed her future goals as City Historian for 2009.
She pointed out that 180 bound books produced monthly from August 1971 to December 1986 of every
page of the Valley Times Newspapers would be given to the Dublin Library from the San Ramon Library.
Cm. Acuff asked if the Dublin Library has a temperature-controlled room in which to store the archived
newspapers. Cm. Vonheeder-Leopold stated not at this time, but that the Library does have a large area in
the back where items can be temporarily kept. The priority is to obtain the newspapers and get them
scanned.

Cm. Carr asked how scanned archived documents would be stored. Cm. Vonheeder-Leopold stated that
she would more than likely need a website and a separate computer just for storing scanned documents.
Cm. Carr recommended that in addition to the scanned archives being stored on a separate computer, they
should also be backed -up at an off -site location.
9.1 Other Business
Cm. Lussie reported that she recently assisted in publishing a book.
Cm. Vonheeder-Leopold stated that she would like the Commission's Goals and Objectives to include
creating a new and improved pamphlet on the City's public art pieces. Mr. Hartnett indicated that this was
already a goal for this fiscal year and that there were some funds set aside in the budget.
Cm. Carr reported that the Transit Committee Kick-off Meeting would be held on December 17, 2008.
Chair Swalwell, Cm. Mack and Mr. Hartnett expressed their pleasure in working with Commissioners
Acuff and Lussie over the past years, and also expressed their sadness in the Commissioners' departure
from the Commission (due to term limit expiration).
Mr. Hartnett reminded the Commission about the upcoming Bay Bells concert on December 14.
