HomeMy WebLinkAbout8.3 ComeToLifeEventOutcomes ~ 111 82 AGENDA STATEMENT PARKS AND COMMUNITY SERVICES COMMISSION MEETING DATE: June 16, 2008 SUBJECT: Outcomes of Come to Life Event Report by Paul McCreary, Parks and Community Services Manager ATTACHMENTS: None RECOMMENDATION: Receive report FINANCIAL STATEMENT: None DESCRIPTION: On Saturday, May 17, 2008, the Dublin Senior Center hosted the "Come to Life" Event from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. This year the event goals were to: ¦ Attract new customers to the Senior Center and have them return to try other activities; ¦ Encourage participants to engage in new recreational activities, games, sports and hobbies that strengthen the mind, body and spirit; ¦ Have fun playing, exploring and connecting; ¦ Gain insight into needs for new programs and activities for older adults. The day began with a fun 30-minute act featuring a man and his best friend, "Dana and Lacey". The keynote speaker was Doug McConnell, host of Bay Area Backroads and co-founder of OpenRoad TV, The Travelers's Video Guide to the American West. Doug talked about fun and interesting stories from his travels and explained how travel and exploration contributes to a healthy and happy mind. Following the keynote address a free lunch was served. The afternoon consisted of fun-filled activities to promote laughter and playfulness. The senior theatrical experts Stagebridge, a seven-person team, performed a 30-minute interactive improvisational act called "Antic Witty's", a spoof from TV's Antique Road Show. There was also an interactive sing-a-long opportunity with Paulette Rene. The afternoon also featured carnival-like games, hands-on craft projects and interactive games like the Wii, ping pong and a putting competition. In order to encourage participation in all of the activities, participants received a Bingo card to track participation in the activities. Those who completed a Bingo on their card were entered into a drawing for door prizes. She also assisted with the development of a Memory Lane Exhibition featuring historical photos and news clippings of Dublin pre- 1970. ATTENDANCE AND OUTCOMES Based on the head count it is estimated that 175 people attended the event. A total of 132 evaluations were collected, and 161 lunches tickets were redeemed. Following is a summary of the top responses to the evaluation questions. Following is a suminary of the actual outcomes. ¦ Attract new custoiners to the Senior Center and have them return to try other activities. o There were 26 new customers at the event, of which 89% plan to return to try new activities, events and programs. ¦ Encourage participants to engage in new recreational activities, games, sports and hobbies that strengthen the mind, body and spirit. o The second most popular event component was the games. Therefore it appears most of the participants did try something new while at the event. ¦ Have fun playing, exploring and connecting. 0 77% of the survey respondents indicated a fun level of 4 or 5 out of 5. ¦ Gain insight into needs for new programs and activities for older adults. o Over 60 suggestions were made by survey respondents, which will be considered as future programs are implemented. 0 RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends that the Parks and Community Services Commission receive the report. 3 of 3
