HomeMy WebLinkAbout8.2 Summer Special Event Preview OF Dp~~y 19.1=iN7`82, AGENDA STATEMENT PARKS AND COMMLTNITY SERVICES COMMISSION MEETING DATE: May 19, 2008 SUBJECT: 2008 Summer Special Event Preview Report Prepared by Lorri Polon, Recreation Coordinator ATTACHMENTS: None RECOMMENDATION: Receive report and provide input on proposed event components F'INANCIAL STATEMENT: None DESCRIPTION: The Department continues to emphasize planning special events that provide fun and memorable experiences, while creating a sense of community and enhancing cultural unity. Following is a summary of the events planned for this summer. Fathers Dav Picnic (June 15; Emerald Glen Park) The Father's Day Picnic will be held on Sunday, June 15`h in the Group Picnic Area at Emerald Glen Park. Last year's picnic was a huge success and sold out two weeks prior to the event. The cost is only $2.00 per person and includes reserved table seating, crafts, group and individual games and live entertainment. Attendees can bring their own picnic lunch or purchase BBQ items (hamburgers/hotdogs) that will be prepared on-site by Staff. Inaueural Communitv Golf Tournament (June 24; Dublin Ranch Golf Course) Come be a part of history and tee it up in this inaugural event. The toumament will be held on Tuesday, June 24, beginning at 1:00 p.m. with a shotgun start. This tournament uses a"scramble" format in which the best of the group's shots is selected and played again until the ball is holed. Handicaps are not used. The day will end with a putting contest, silent auction and awards banquet. The menu consists of marinated grilled chicken, barbecue pork ribs, pasta and green salads, mashed potatoes, corn on the cob and dessert. The tournament price is an amazing golf value and includes green fees, carts, use of the practice range, and the awards banquet. Tee prizes will be given for the longest drive, closest to the pin, hole-in-one and putting contests. Registration fees are $65 for adults and $30 for teens and seniors. There is also an option for a dinner ticket only, which is $25 per person. Groups and individual registrations will be accepted. Individual registrations will be formed into groups with an "intergeneration" theme in mind, combining golfers of various ages whenever possible. COPIES TO: ITEM NO.: 8.2 GAPARKS COMMISSION\AGNDSTMT\200815-19 Item 8.2 Summer Event Preview.doc Family Camp Out (Julv 12-13; Alamo Creek Park) The 2" annual Family Camp Out will be held the second weekend in July at Alamo Creek Park. The park is only minutes away from home, yet gives participants the feeling like they are miles away. It is a great way to try camping with young children, without having to go to the scary wilderness. Check-in and activities will begin at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday. A variety of activities have been planned to keep families active and entertained throughout the event. During the evening there will also be a barbecue dinner, camp fire, camp songs, storytelling and even "s'mores". The following morning will feature a continental breakfast and more activities. Check-out will be at 10:00 a.m. The fee is $12 per person for residents. This event sold out last year with 160 in attendance. Staff has created more capacity to serve 20 additional participants this year. Summer Concert Series (Fridavs, July ll-August 8; Dublin Civic Center Plaza) The Summer Concert Series kicks off on July l lth at 7:00 p.m. in the Plaza by the fountain at the Dublin Civic Center. These five consecutive Friday night musical concerts are free and will feature the following professional entertainment. ¦ Joni Moms (Country) Joni Morris is a nationally acclaimed entertainer, songwriter and recording artist who provides unforgettable, classic music from yesterday and today. ¦ The Hitmen (70's) The Hitmen play a variety of hits from the 70's to modern day favorites. The nine piece band mix their abilities and experiences to create a dance review that transcends musical boundaries. ¦ The Wild Catahoulas (Cajun/Zydeco) The Wi1d Catahoulas is the hot new Cajun/Zydeco band in the North Bay. They merge traditzonal Cajun French music from Southwest Louisiana with contemporary Zydeco and New Orleans sound. ¦ Led Kaapana (Hawaiian) Chet Atkins and Bob Dylan have both stated that 2005 Grammy Award Winner Led Kaapana is simply the best musician alive in Hawaii. He has recorded with Ricky Skaggs, Bonnie Raitt, Taj Mahal and George Winston. ¦ Swing Fever (30's & 40's jazz) Swing Fever has been performing jazz of the 1930's and 1940's for twenty-nine years. The band has toured and recorded with renowned musicians including Count Basie, Clark Terry and Buddy DeFranco among others. The Dublin San Ramon Women's Club will once again be providing refreshments for purchase. Outdoor Movie Series (Fridavs, AuSust 15, 29 and September 12; Emerald Glen Park) Emerald Glen Park will also be the site for the 2008 Outdoor Movie Nights, which are entering their third season. Following is the 2008 lineup: ¦ August 15th The Bee Movie ¦ August 29`h Ghostbusters ¦ September 12`h. Surf's Up. Prior movies have drawn crowds of 700 to over 1,000. Admission is free. A concession stand will be setup with refreshments for sale. RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends that the Parks and Community Services Commission receive the report and provide input on proposed event components. 2 of 2
