HomeMy WebLinkAbout8.1 2008 DayOnTheGlen Update OF D~ ?`C~ pl ~G 19 82 AGENDA STATEMENT PARKS AND COMMUNITY SERVICES COMMISSION MEETING DATE: August 18, 2008 SUBJECT: 2008 Day on the Glen Update Report Prepared by Lorri Polon, Recreation Coordinator ATTACHMENTS: Draft - Day on the Glen Poster RECOMMENDATION: Receive Report FINANCIAL STATEMENT: None DESCRIPTION: The 8`h Annual Day on the Glen Festival will be held Saturday and Sunday, September 20 and 21, 2008. This year's theme, "A World of Fun", will incorporate a number of international activities which will allow attendees to learn and experience more about different cultures in our own community and from around the world. The event will be at Emerald Glen Park and feature the following components. Children's Activities: Carnival Rides / Jump Houses / Games / Clowns / Tot Play Area One additional enhancement for youth this year will be an "event passport" that children can pick up at the City Hall Booth. They can bring the passport with them to various culturally oriented locations throughout the park, get it stamped, and return it to the City Hall Booth for a souvenir flag. Animal Exhibits: A separate stage in the Pine Grove area will host two exhibits highlighting animals from around the world including a baboon, serval, and leopards. The Petting Zoo will also provide the opportunity for children to touch Vietnamese potbellied pigs, a Llama, Nigerian dwarf goats, a Welsh Pony, and an Iguana. Main Stage: International entertainment ranging from Nigerian Music to an Indian Ensemble and dance performances from Poland, Ireland, Brazil and India. COPIES TO: ITEM NO.: 8.1 GAPARKS COMMISSIONAGNDSTMT12008\8-18 Day on the Glen.doc A special Army Community Covenant Signing Ceremony with local mayors, military officials and other dignitaries will take place on Saturday at 12:25pm to acknowledge and commemorate the on- going community partnership between the City of Dublin and Camp Parks. Sports Competitions: Volleyball Tournaments 3 on 3 Basketball Tournaments Skateboard Competition Ice Skating Food: Continuing with the international theme, there will be food vendors representing Thailand, Germany, Philippines, Italy, Africa and India, as well as traditional American fare. Concert: Saturday evening from 6pm to 8pm will feature the renowned sounds of Latin Jazz music artist, Pete Escovedo. Additionally, there will be a variety of booths including non-profit groups, commercial vendors, arts and crafts, event sponsors and government agencies including the City Hall Tent, Dublin Police Services, Alameda County Fire, United States Coast Guard, Dublin Unified School District and Dublin Library. The festival hours are from l0am to Spm both days (the special evening concert will be held on Saturday from 6pm to 8pm). RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends that the Parks and Community Services Commission receive the report. 2of2 ~ i
