RECOMMENDATION: Receive report and provide input

DESCRIPTION: The Family Camp Out event at Alamo Creek Park provides an
opportunity for residents to experience outdoor camping with their families without traveling long
distances. This event facilitates opportunities for family members of all ages to interact with other
families, develop new relationships and create a sense of community. This event features a barbeque
dinner, traditional camp games, activities and campfire entertainment. The evening is highlighted with
camp songs around the campfire followed by roasting marshmallows for s'mores.
Over 180 people attended the 2009 Camp Out and there was a waiting list of 38 people. The popularity
of this event has grown tremendously and Staff has expanded the current Camp Out at Alamo Creek Park
to accommodate 40 more participants this year. Staff has also included funds in the proposed Fiscal Year
2010-2011 budget to offer a second Family Camp Out in September 2010 at Emerald Glen Park. This
will help accomplish many goals in the Parks and Community Services Strategic Plan including:
• Promote and support programs that meet the specific needs of families with children (Goal #3. a. i)
• Re-align existing programs and create new offerings to promote and support:
o Positive youth development and strong families (Goal 43. b. ii)
o Personal enrichment and participation in hobbies, leisure pursuits and self-help activities
(Goal #3. b. vii)
o Appreciation of nature and participation in unique and adventurous outdoor recreational
activities (Goal 43. b. ix)
• Actively seek venues and partnerships to expand communiry festivals and events (Goal #3. c)
• When feasible provide programs in two or more locations to provide easier neighborhood access
to programs (Goal #5.g)
• Create social connections and strong sense of community within neighborhoods (Strategy #7)

Staff recommends implementing the second Camp Out at Emerald Glen Park near the creek and Group
Picnic Area. This site can accommodate 250 campers. The general format of the Family Camp Out at
Emerald Glen Park will be similar to the Alamo Creek event; however additional activities will be added
to differentiate the events. In addition to traditional camp games, crafts, and campfire activities, the
Emerald Glen Camp Out will feature an activity track focusing on nature. Parents and children will be
encouraged to participate together in nature based arts and crafts.
The camp site is adjacent to Tassajara Creek which fosters a special habitat for campers to explore. Staff
from Glen the Guide's Nature Day camp and a Naturalist from the East Bay Regional Park District will
lead an evening nature walk teaching families about this special habitat in their backyard. Also, Staff will
coordinate games at the bocce ball courts next to the picnic area.
A few campsites are still available for the Alamo Creek Camp Out on July 10-11. Registration fees are
$IS per person for Dublin residents and $17 for non-residents. Registration can be done online at
www.DublinRecGuide.com using Activity #24140, or by visiting the Shannon Community Center.
RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends that the Parks and Community Services
Commission receive the report and provide input.
