Cultural Arts Classes Registration Report - 2009 RECOMMENDATION: Receive Report FINANCIAL STATEMENT: None DESCRIPTION: The Heritage and Cultural Arts Division implements a number of quality art programs that strengthen community image and provide recreational and artistic experiences for the community. This goal is accomplished by providing various cultural program offerings in the areas of arts and crafts, music, dance, and visual and performing arts. Following is a summary of programs conducted during summer 2010. CULTURAL ARTS CLASSES: Cultural arts classes are intended to serve customers of all ages and cover a wide range of arts activities such as theatre and dance camps/classes, classes in piano, guitar, exercise and movement, drawing, painting, children's art education and others. Cultural arts classes provide an opportunity for participants to attempt new experiences, advance current artistic skills, as well as provide a social setting for meeting new people and sharing cultural arts experiences with friends and family members. Arts classes are taught by contracted specialty instructors. A majority of classes are taught in eight-week sessions but some are more or less than eight weeks and others are offered as one-time workshops. A total of 370 participants registered for Cultural Arts Classes during summer 2010, which was a decrease of 8% over summer 2009. The cancellation rate for classes was 1% less than in 2009 and the average registration per class decreased from last year from 10.63 to 8.22 participants per class, although eight more classes were offered. In terms of revenue, the 2010 summer classes generated $46,305 which was down slightly from the 2009 figure of $48,561. Popular classes included; All 4 Dance Camp, Beauty & the Beast Drama Camp, Ballet and Hip Hop classes, art classes by Young Rembrandts and Kindermusik classes. Attachment 2 is a Registration Report for summer 2009 for comparison purposes. Registration per Class 8.22 10.63 Classes Offered 55 47 Cancellation Rate 18% 19% Upcoming Fall Classes (New) Santa Clause versus the Wicked Winter Witch: A Children's Theatre class offered by the Tri-Valley Young Performers Academy, culminating in holiday performances for family and friends. Gotta Sing I& II - Performance Coaching: Classes for youth in several age categories up to 18 years that provides personalized coaching for students who want to explore and develop their singing skills. The advanced class includes a session at a professional studio where students will record their chosen song and be provided a CD of the recording. Pee Wee Art Time: A new class for children which introduces fun-to-do arts & crafts projects followed by time for exploration of other art mediums of the child's choice. Young Rembrandts Art classes: A series of new art classes for pre-school and elementary aged youth, focusing on teaching basic to advanced drawing skills, depending on the skill level of each student. Zumba for Fun & Fitness: This class is the latest cardio/dance fitness craze for adults. Upcoming Events Winter Concert Series - November: The third annual "Hometown Heroes" Celebration honoring our veterans will be held on Sunday, November 7~' at the Dublin Senior Center. Following the event, there will be a concert for the public featuring the Camp Park's "191 S" Army Band-the Band of the Wild West The event is free to the public and refreshments will also be served. Winter Concert Series - December: Bay Bells is back again by popular demand and will offer a holiday concert entitled "Bay Bells-Silver Bells" at the Dublin Senior Center at 3:30 pm on Sunday, December 12`". The concert will be approximately one-hour long and youth and children are especially invited to attend. RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends that the Heritage and Cultural Arts Commission receive the report. 2 of 2
