Activities and programs conducted by the Recreation Department are offered on a quarterly basis and promoted through the Schedule of Recreation Classes and Programs mailed to Dublin residents four times per year. Below is a summary of the activities conducted during the Fall quarter, September through December, 1990. Adult Sports Fall Adult 5oftball Leagues were conducted at the Dublin Sports Grounds beginning September 16, 1990 and concluding November 9, 1990. This ended an extremely successful first full season of softball in which a total of 198 teams participated (Spring, Summer and Fall leagues). A total of 52 teams participated in the fall league in the following divisions; Mens C-1, Mens C-2, Mens D-1, Mens C-Open, Mens D-Open and Coed-D. Leagues were offered on Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Friday Nights with soccer utilizing the fields on Tuesday and Thursday nights. Game times were 6:45pm, 8:OOpm and 9:15pm. The team fee of $225 (plus a $10 per player non-resident fee) provided a scorekeeper, game ball, two umpires per game, team statistics and awards for both first and second place finishers in each division. Afterschool Playgrounds For the past six years, the Recreation Department has conducted afterschool playground programs at Murray and Nielsen Elementary Schools. The program is offered for children in grades one through five and is held from 2:00- 5:OOpm, Monday through Friday, with the exception of City and School District holidays, and School District.minimum days. The first day of the program at Murray and Nielsen Schools was Monday, October 1, 1990. Average daily attendance for the sites has been 18 for Murray and 43 for Nielsen. Activities include holiday parties (Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas) as well as special craft projects and games. In November, children at both sites made holiday ornaments and cards for service men and women stationed in the Middle East; we recently received a thank you letter from one of the servicemen who received an ornament. A special event held in December was "Santa's Workshop", a holiday craft and game workshop held at the Shannon Community Center. A total of 46 children from both sites attended this special holiday activity. Leisure Enrichment Classe5 A total of "66" classes were offered during the 1990 Fall Quarter, with a success rate of 68%. Twenty-six of these classes were for the teen/adult age group and "40" for the preschool/youth age group. The preschool age classes were the most popular with a success rate of 100%. The classes for "Just You and Me'~ and "Time for Two's" filled so rapidly, that extra sessions were added to accommodate the demand. "Jazz Dance", "Tap and Ballet", and "Karate" were popular among the school age group. ~~~__~~~~ ~ ~~~~___~~~~__~~~~~~~_~_~~~_~~~~~~___~~~__~~~~~~_~~~~_~~~~r ITEM NO. The "Gingerbread House" class almost doubled its maximum enrollment, and a second ses5ion was added to meet the demand. The "Outlet Shopping Spree" was cancelled for a seaond consecutive quarter. Staff anticipates to target flyers to the appropriate groups to increase the success rate of this program. Preschool Classes The preschool program continues to be popular. The program accommodates preschool children ages 2 years-9 months through 5 years of age. Two out of the three programs offered in Session I(September 10-November 30) filled to capacity. The program requires parent participation at least 3-4 times per session to keep the costs down. Special.activities offered this quarter included a"Get Acquainted Picnic" at the Oakland Zoo, a trip to the "Hagemann Pumpkin Patch" for Halloween, and singing at the Dublin Senior Center, ending with the Preschool Holiday Pageant in December. Senior Center The Senior Center honored it's volunteers with a Volunteer Recognition Luncheon in September. Volunteers were treated to lunch, entertained, and presented with a token of the Center's appreciation. Adult Education classes offered through the Dublin School District resumed meeting in September. Classes included quilting, line, round and ballroom dance, and crafts. Average daily attendance for September was 70. In October the Center promoted the use of Kolb Park by holding a pot-luck picnic in the park. Community Television filmed the aerobic and line dance classes for segments on the "Young At Heart" program on Channel 30. The aerobic segment was aired in November. A new blood pressure screening program was established through Fairmont Hospital with personnel at the Center on a monthly basis. In the future the Fairmont Medi-Van will be made available to the Center. Average dail.y attendance for October was 69. The Mature Driver program was again offered at the Center in November. American Association of Retired Persons sponsors this class. The Thanksgiving luncheon was a success with 115 attending. Average November attendance was 74. December was a busy month starting with the Center's first holiday bazaar on December l. The following Saturday the Center presented an elegant holiday dinner-dance to a sold out crowd. The Christmas luncheon found Santa (Pete Snyder) giving out goodies to seniors and the Shannon Center Preschool children entertaining those in attendance. Average daily attendance for December was 65. Special Events• Halloween Spooktacular The First Annual Family Halloween Spooktacular was held on Hailoween night, Wednesday, October 31, 1990. The event was held at the Shannon Community Center from 7:00-8:30pm. This years event was different from past events in that it was intended to serve as an alternative to trick-or-treating and was designed for families to attend. It featured two rooms with Halloween booths, refreshments, a costume contest and entertainment. Based on a low enrollment of 117 paid participants, Staff has determined that Halloween night may not be a good date to have chosen and looks to offer a similar activity during the weekend prior to Halloween next year. • AGENDA STATEMENT - FEBRUARY 25, 1991 Page Three Tree Liahting Ceremonv C~ The Seventh Annual City of Dublin Tree Lighting Ceremony was held on Monday, December 3, 1990, from 6:30-7:30pm at the Dublin Civic Center. At the same time the 17 foot tree at the Civic Center was lit, the outdoor tree at the Dublin Library was also lit. Entertainment for the event included performances by the Dublin High School Band and a local youth group known as the Bay Area Love Notes. Following the entertainment was a special appearance by Santa along with refreshments which were provided by the Tri-Valley Lioness. Admission to the event was one non-perishable food item which was donated to the Children's Emergency Fund. Attendance for the evening was approximately 150. Breakfast With Santa The Sixth Annual Breakfast With Santa was conducted on December 7, 1990 at the Shannon Community Center. The Dublin Band Boosters served breakfast to "261" adults and children in two seatings. The children in attendance were given reindeer antlers to wear and holiday theme placemats to color. Polaroid pictures were sold for $2.00 each and were'mounted in a holiday card. Even though the attendance was less than last years event, many of those in attendance indicated that they preferred the fewer number of people, as it was less crowded. Teens The lunchtime activities program at Wells Middle School began on Wednesday, October 31 with a"Whipped Cream Jelly Bean Hunt". Students were very receptive to the activity that pitted the boys against the girls. Over 100 students were entertained by this event. During the Fall Quarter, 13 activities were conducted with an average of 62 participants and 70 spectators. Staff was also approached by the faculty at Wells about implementing an afterschool program. While there are no immediate plans to implement this type of program, Staff is interested in pursuing it for next year.
