HomeMy WebLinkAbout02-10-2011 Approved HCAC MinutesCITY OF DUBLIN HERITAGE AND CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION Minutes February 10, 2011 The February 10, 2011 meeting of the Heritage and Cultural Arts Commission was called to order at 6:59 p.m. at the Dublin Civic Center, Dublin, California, by Chair Tutino. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE Chair Tutino led the Pledge of Allegiance. ROLL CALL Commissioners (Cm.) Present: Tutino, Hernandez, King, Minniear, Vanderpool Commissioners Absent: Carr, Halket ORAL COMMUNICATIONS Ms. Caroline Soto, City Clerk, administered the Oath of Office to newly appointed Commissioners Delilah Vanderpool and Morgan King, Sr. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Chair Tutino stated that consideration for approval of the December 9, 2010 and January 13, 2011 meeting minutes would take place at a later meeting when the required number of Commissioners is in attendance. WRITTEN COMMUNICATIONS - None PUBLIC HEARING - None UNFINISHED BUSINESS - None NEW BUSINESS 8.1 FALL 2010 QUARTERLY REPORT Mr. John Hartnett, Heritage and Cultural Arts Manager, presented the specifics of the item as outlined in the Staff Report. Cm. Minniear asked about offering classes oriented toward chronicling family history or dealing with heritage themes. Mr. Hartnett stated that some of these types of classes were offered in the past but did not garner adequate participation. Cm. Minniear asked Staff to consider efforts towards getting young people in the community more interested in their history and the heritage of Dublin. Ms. Elizabeth Isles, Heritage Center Director, stated that she would look into it. Ms. Hernandez asked about offering activities that utilize various electronic programs and forums. Ms. Isles started that she is currently using the internet site "Dublin Patch" as a way of drawing increased attention to Dublin's heritage and the City's online resources. Chair Tutino asked about the proportion of classes that are geared towards children. Mr. Hartnett stated that in the Heritage and Cultural Arts Division, about two-thirds of classes offered are for children. Mr. Hartnett added that, overall, the Parks and Community Services Department programs about fifty percent of its classes for children. H&CAC Minutes -February 10, 2011 Page 2 of 2 Chair Tutino stated that it is encouraging to see an increase in registrations given the current state of the economy. Cm. Vanderpool stated that it would be a good idea to work with the Youth Advisory Committee on programming ideas that would interest the youth. Mr. Hartnett stated that there is an upcoming Joint Meeting with the Parks and Community Services Commission and the Youth Advisory Committee to engage in discussion on ideas for youth programming. 8.2 HERITAGE CENTER PROGRAMS UPDATE Ms. Elizabeth Isles, Heritage Center Director, presented the specifics of the item as outlined in the Staff Report. In addition, she presented a picture slideshow of the programs, workshops and events that took place at the Heritage Center over the past fiscal year. She also provided information on upcoming events scheduled for next fiscal year. Cm. Vanderpool asked how the tickets for the tea events would be sold. Ms. Isles stated that the tickets are generally sold at the door. Cm. Minniear asked about the proposed concept for the antique fair. Ms. Isles explained that the antique fair is being planned with adults and antique aficionados in mind. She stated that the event details are still in the planning phase. Mr. Hartnett provided an overview of additional upcoming programs and events. OTHER BUSINESS 9.1 BRIEF INFORMATIONAL ONLY REPORTS FROM COMMISSIONERS AND/OR STAFF AND REPORTS BY COMMISSION RELATED TO MEETINGS ATTENDED AT CITY EXPENSE (AB1234). Cm. Tutino reported that she attended the Black History Celebration. Cm. Minniear asked about the status of the public art installation at the Dublin Transit Center BART station and Mr. Hartnett provided an update. Cm. Minniear asked about the Hometown Heroes event and Mr. Hartnett stated that the event was well received. The Commissioners briefly introduced themselves for the benefit of the new Commissioners. Mr. Hartnett informed the Commission of program and project updates. ADJOURNMENT Being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 7:48 p.m. Respectfully submitt d?
