HomeMy WebLinkAbout10-14-2010 Approved HCAC MinutesCITY OF DUBLIN HERITAGE AND CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION Minutes October 14, 2010 The October 14, 2010 meeting of the Heritage and Cultural Arts Commission was called to order at 7:00 p.m. at the Dublin Civic Center, Dublin, California, by Chair Minniear. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE Chair Minniear led the Pledge of Allegiance. ROLL CALL Commissioners (Cm.) Present: Minniear, Nuckols, Mack, Tutino, Vonheeder-Leopold Commissioners Absent: Carr, Halket ORAL COMMUNICATIONS - None APPROVAL OF MINUTES On a motion by Cm. Vonheeder-Leopold, seconded by Cm. Mack, and by a vote of 4-0-1 with Cms. Carr and Halket absent and with Vice Chair Nuckols' abstention, the Commission voted to approve the minutes of September 9, 2010 as presented. Vice Chair Nuckols abstained from the vote due to her absence during the meeting of September 9, 2010. WRITTEN COMMUNICATIONS - None PUBLIC HEARING -None UNFINISHED BUSINESS - None NEW BUSINESS 8.1 SUMMER 2010 QUARTERLY REPORT Mr. John Hartnett, Heritage and Cultural Arts Manager, presented the specifics of the item as outlined in the Staff Report. Vice Chair Nuckols asked about offering music classes without age limit requirements, such as piano classes. Mr. Hartnett stated that he would propose the idea to the music instructors. Chair Minniear asked if there were any cancellation trends that might suggest reasons for the cancellations. Mr. Hartnett stated that although trends constantly change, he has noticed reduced participation in some of the adult classes, such as Belly Dance and Country Western Line Dance. Cm. Tutino asked if Staff has encountered problems in locating class space, and Mr. Hartnett said yes. Mr. Hartnett stated that with the addition of the Kolb family properties at the Dublin Heritage Park, there should be more facility space available for classes in the future, beginning this summer. CJn. Tutino asked about the possibility of getting a ceramics kiln for ceramics and pottery classes. Mr. Hartnett stated that this idea has been proposed and should be included as part of the Dublin Heritage Park facilities and programs. H&CAC Meeting - October 14, 2010 8.2 PRESENTATION OF THE NEW CITY OF DUBLIN WEBSITE Mr. John Hartnett, Heritage and Cultural Arts Manager, presented the specifics of the item as outlined in the Staff Report. Mr. Hartnett and Ms. Elizabeth Isles, Heritage Center Director, presented an overview of the new website, specifically the Heritage and Cultural Arts pages. Vice Chair Nuckols asked about access to the website that contains the archived historical photographs. Ms. Isles stated that Staff is currently working on restoring the website. Chair Minniear suggested adding pictures of the Kolb properties to the website. 8.3 CAMP PARKS HISTORICAL ARTIFACTS Ms. Elizabeth Isles, Heritage Center Director, presented the specifics of the item as outlined in the Staff Report. Cm. Vonheeder-Leopold provided a brief history about the Camps Parks History Center. Cm. Tutino asked how compliance with the first condition would be obtained. Mr. Hartnett explained that if approved by the City Council, the items would be securely stored in the Dublin Library expansion space and displayed occasionally in small sections at the Murray Schoolhouse. Cm. Tutino asked about the possibility of the Army's Center of Military History deciding to maintain possession of the items. Cm. Vonheeder-Leopold stated that it is a possibility that will be based on the criteria used in the decision process. On a motion by Chair Minniear, seconded by Cm. Vonheeder-Leopold, and by a vote of 5-0-0 with Cms. Carr and Halket absent, the Commission voted to recommended to the City Council the following action: 1) Direct Staff to send a letter to Lieutenant Colonel Friend indicating the City's interest in securing a donation of historical artifacts from the former History Center at Camp Parks, and 2) Direct Staff to pursue the concept of a permanent museum of military history at the community park in the future Camp Parks development. OTHER BUSINESS 9.1 OTHER BUSINESS Chair Minniear reported that he has been working with Ms. Isles on a photo book related to Camp Parks. Cm. Tutino suggested that Staff visit the Sun Gallery in Hayward for activity ideas. Mr. Hartnett informed the Commission that there will not be a Commission meeting in November 2010.
