SPECIAL JOINT MEETING

CITY OF DUBLIN
February 23, 2011
The February 23, 2011 Special Joint Meeting of the Parks & Community Services Commission and
Youth Advisory Committee was called to order at 7:15 p.m. at the Dublin Civic Center, Dublin,
California, by Chair Elias.

Chair Elias led the Pledge of Allegiance.

8.1 TEEN PROGRAMMING AND COMMUNICATIONS WORKSHOP
Mr. Paul McCreary, Assistant Director of Parks and Community Services, presented the specifics of the
item as outlined in the Staff Report.
Ms. Angela Gamez, Recreation Technician, led the group in an exercise aimed at identifying how the
teens spend their free time and how the adults spent their free time when they were teens.
The group reported that they like (or liked) to participate in the following types of activities in their free
time (the top eight activities were the most popular):
• Being with Friends and Family
• Going to Concerts
• Dancing and Listening to Music and Dance
• Sports (watching and/or participating)
• Going to Shopping Centers/Malls
• Biking and/or Hiking

• Reading and/or Writing
• Watching Television
• Model Train Sets
• Photography & Creating Videos
• Parties
• Cooking/Eating
• Blogging
• Skateboarding
• Swimming
• Paint-balling
• State and Regional Parks
• Golfing
• Wake-boarding
• BBQs and Picnics
• Playgrounds
• Movies
• Facebook
• Beach
• Daytrips (San Francisco, San Jose, etc.)
• Video Games
• Drive-Ins
• Being Outdoor
The teens reported that they have an average of 2.6 hours of free time per day and the adults reported that
they have an average of 3.6 hours of free time per day.
Mr. Frank Luna, Recreation Supervisor, provided an overview of the current City of Dublin programs and
activities offered for teens as outlined in the Staff Report. The Commission and Committee received the
Report.
Mr. Luna led the group in an exercise aimed at identifying the activities and programs that are currently
available for teens in Dublin.
The group reported that they knew of the following activities/places that are currently available in Dublin:
• Skateboarding
• Swimming
• Biking/hiking
• Ulferts Shopping Center
• Regional parks
• Golfing
• BBQ/picnics
• Playgrounds
• Iceskating
• Bowling
• Cafe Art
• Movie theater
• Hacienda Crossings

Mr. Luna then asked the group to think about the activities they would like to be available in Dublin in
five years. The group reported that they would like to see the following in Dublin's future:
• Performing Arts Center / Theater
• Concert venue
• Paintball park
• Union Square Mall type of facility
• Sky High II type of facility
• Teen Center where teens could study, watch movies, play games, etc.
Mr. Luna provided an overview of Staff's recommendation on how teen programming should be reduced
in the future.
Cm. Boboc asked about the Teen Survey developed by the City that was distributed to Dublin Middle and
High School students in February 2011. Ms. Gamez stated that Staff is still compiling the results of the
survey; however, preliminary results show that the main reasons teens do not participate in City-
sponsored events are because they are too busy, their friends do not plan to attend the event, or they do
not hear about the events.
Chair Elias asked if the Department felt that it was programming teen events to fulfill a need or
programming teen events more for the sake of programming. Mr. McCreary stated that because teens are
not attending the majority of the events, the Department feels as though it is programming teen events for
the sake of programming.
Staff asked for feedback on how to best promote activities for teens. The group provided the following
suggestions:
• Increase `word of mouth' promotion by Youth Advisory Committee Members as well as other
teens. The school announcements are not an effective promotional tool.
• Utilize Facebook with "cool" graphics to promote events; Facebook is more popular than Twitter
among teens.
Text messaging is not recommended.
Mr. McCreary asked if the Commission and Advisory Committee supported the proposed modifications
to teen programming, and the Commission and Advisory Committee acknowledged their support of the
proposed modifications to teen programming.
