AGENDA STATEMENT
CITY COUNCIL MEETING DATE: January 21, 2003
SUBJECT: Correspondence from TN Cattle Co., Inc. regarding the Historic
Underpass Mural
Report by Theresa Yvonne, Heritage & Cultural Arts Supervisor
ATTACHMENTS: 1. Correspondence from Roxanne Nielsen on behalf of the TN Cattle
Co., Inc.
RECOMMENDATION: Consider Offer
FINANCIAL STATEMENT: None
DESCRIPTION: Correspondence has been received from Roxanne Nielsen on behalf
of the TN Cattle Co., Inc. regarding the Historic Underpass Mural (Attachment 1). In her letter, Ms.~
Nielsen expresses her appreciation for the mural but points out that in order to make the mural more
authentic, the cattle displayed on the mural need a brand, as it is state law that all cattle display a brand.
As the Nielsen family is the only active cattle operation residing in the City of Dublin, she offers the use
of the TN Cattle Co., Inc. brand.
Staff has checked with the mural artists who have indicated that it is possible to add the brand to the cattle
at this time. Cattle are traditionally branded on the right rear flank, in order to brand the cattle in the mural
the brand would be placed on the left rear flank. Therefore, Staff would recommend that the City Council
consider the offer from the Nielsen Family to use the TN Cattle Co., Inc. brand on the cattle displayed on
the Historic Underpass Mural.

Re: City Art in Public Places
Dear Honora:bte. Locl~hart:
! have enjoyed watching the developing, murals under the freeway, overpass at Dublin
Blvd. I am delighted that you included the significance of agriculture, and specifically
Cattle ranching in this historical depiction of Dublin's past.
The artwork is beautiful, however to make the display more authentic the cattle need a
brand. It is a state law that all cattle display a brand. The Nielsen family,, the only. active
cattle operation residing in our City, and for the past four generations, has one of the
first registered brands in the State of California!
i would like to offer the use of our brand on the cattle art. It is a very simple TN with a
rounded N. I am enclosing, a copy of it for your reference, the "TN" stands for Tom
Nielsen, my grandfather. We would be greatly honored if the Council finds that my
suggestion of the addition of the Nielsen family's brand to the cattle was appropriate.
Thank you for your consideration in this manner.
Sincerely,
Roxanne Nielsen
