Provide direction to Staff on date and program/activities for Emerald
Glen Park Dedication
Funds have been included in the Fiscal Year 2000-2001 Budget
DESCRIPTION: The City Council identified planning a dedication event for Emerald
Glen Park as a high priority for the year 2000. Staff has developed a tentative event plan and included
funds for the dedication in the Fiscal Year 2000/2001 Budget.
Event Date And Time
Since the dedication may involve Dublin's community groups, Staff believes it would be best to schedule
the event in the fall after summer vacation. Staff contacted the Dublin Youth Soccer League and opening
weekend will be September 9-10. The Pasta Festival will be October 7-8. Therefore, Staff would
recommend scheduling the dedication on either Saturday, September 23 or 30, from 10:00 A.M. to 2:00
P.M.
Preliminary_ Event Components
Although the purpose is to dedicate the new park, the event will feature entertainment and activities
geared towards families. Staff from the Parks and Community Services Department met and developed a
list of potential activities and attractions. It is envisioned that the event would begin with a short
ceremony featuring the ribbon cutting, introduction of local dignitaries, and the unveiling of a dedication
plaque. Additionally, the Dublin San Ramon Services District has indicated the desire to do a ceremonial
"valve turning" to highlight the use of recycled water for park irrigation. Following the ceremony a
variety of activities could be held throughout the park such as:
Professional in-line skating and skateboarding demonstrations and a band/DJ at the Skate Park.
Exhibition Soccer Game with teams from Dublin Youth Soccer League.
Pitching, serving speed or kicking contest using a radar gun.
Face painting and roaming children's entertainment such as clowns and magicians.
Children's craft project such as fossil rubbings in the new playground area (the playground
features a granite fossil wall and there are fossils embedded in the playground walkway)
A photographic display featuring the history of the area where the park is located.

Marketing
The marketing for the park dedication will be handled in-house by Staff. Emerald Glen Park will be
featured on the front and back covers of the Fall Activity Guide, which will be mailed the second week of
August. Detailed event information will be included in the Activity Guide. Staff will also produce flyers
that will be distributed to all Dublin schools in early September. Special invitations will be mailed to
local dignitaries, members of the Emerald Glen Park Task Force, and representatives from each of
Dublin's community groups. Information will also be posted on the marquee at Shannon Park and the
electronic reader-board at the Dublin Auto Center.
Parks & Community_ Services Commission Recommendations
At the June 19, 2000 meeting of the Parks & Community Services Commission, the Commission
considered the dedication date and proposed activities for the dedication. The Commission felt that
activities should be planned throughout the park and that there should be a variety of activities for all
ages. They also encouraged the involvement of the youth sports leagues and service clubs. Youth sports
leagues could be involved with sports demonstrations or contests, or could set-up an informational display
to distribute information. Service clubs could assist with food serving or could set-up an informational
display to distribute information. The Commission did not have a preference for the date.
Conclusion
In order to insure that there is adequate lead time to plan for the dedication of Emerald Glen Park, Staff
recommends that the City Council choose a date for the dedication and provide direction on the preferred
program and activities for the dedication.
