Two Neighborhood Parks are included in the Development. The 2010-2015 City of Dublin Capital Improvement Program includes funding for design and construction of one of the Neighborhood Parks. On January 18, 2011 the City Council approved an Agreement with MPA Design for the 4.6 acre Neighborhood Park in the Positano Development. At the meeting, Staff also sought City Council direction on whether the park should officially be named Positano Park, as it is currently referred to in the Capital Improvement Program, or whether the City Council would prefer that Staff return at a later date with options related to the naming of the park. The City Council directed Staff to engage the public in the naming process for both of the parks in the Positano Development. An online survey was used to solicit input from the public regarding potential park names. Potential respondents were provided with the following information to assist in the naming process. ~ The first park, currently in the design stages, is a 4.6+/- acre park bordered by Valentano Drive, Lattari Street, and Montese Drive. It backs up to open space and gently rolling hills. The second park is a 5.0+/- acre park bordered by Positano Parkway, Via Veneto Drive, and East Cantara Drive. It is adjacent to a future elementary school, yet to be named. The following general guidelines may be helpful in determining names for the parks. • Name reflects the geographic location of the facility (neighborhood/development, major street or regional area of the .City) • Name reflects a prominent form of topography, or a prominent plant, bush or tree • Name reflects the history of the area (family name of the builder or person donating the land) • Name recognizes a significant contributor to the advancement of the City (former Mayor, Councilmember, Board/Commission Member, etc.) Respondents could suggest finro names per park and were able to provide comments as well. Twelve persons responded to the survey and the suggested park names are as follows. 4.6+/- acre park bordered bv Valentano Drive, Lattari Street, and Montese Drive 1) Beag (Irish for Little) 2) Casey Nice 3) Claddagh Park 4) Floyd Gill 5) Lattari Park 6) Murray Park (In reference to Michael Murray the historica/ figure with Fallon) 7) Parco Sbranti 8) Pedro Vages Park 9) Positano Hills 10) Positano Park (2) 11) Saint Patrick's Park 12) Sinclair Park 13) St. Claire Park 14) The Park at Positano 15) Valentine Park 16) Verde Colline Page 2 of 4 5:0+/- acre park bordered by Positano Parkwav, Via Veneto Drive, and E. Suqqestions from the Parks and Communitv Services Commission On May 16, 2011 the Parks and Community Services Commission considered potential names for the finro parks and recommended three names for each park. Attachment 2 is a copy of the draft minutes from the Parks and Community Services Commission meeting. The following are the recommendations from the Commission in no particular order. 4.6+/- acre park bordered by Valentano Drive, Lattari Street, and Montese Drive • Diamond Memorial Park • Lattari Park • Positano Hills Park 5.0+/- acre park bordered by Positano Parkway, Via Veneto Drive, and E. Cantara Drive • Diamond Memorial Park • Parco Tramonto • Roscommon Park Diamond Memorial Park was a suggestion developed by the Parks and Community Services Commission in remembrance of Staff Sergeant Sean Diamond, a Dublin resident who died in 2009 while serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom. Although the City Council adjourns each City Council meeting in memory of Staff Sergeant Diamond, the Parks and Community Services Commission had a lengthy discussion about other ways to memorialize his service to the Country. The Parks and Community Services Commission likened it to Mape Memorial Park, which was named after Dublin's first fallen soldier in the Vietnam War. The Commissioners felt, if the park could not be named after Staff Sergeant Diamond, that perhaps he could be memorialized in some other manner in the community. The remaining finro names for the 4.6+/- acre park were Lattari Park due to the adjacency to Lattari Street, and Positano Hills Park in reference to the gently rolling hills to the north of the park. The remaining two names for the 5.0+/- acre park were Parco Tramonto and Roscommon Park. Chairperson Elias had done some research on several names, which he shared with the Parks and Community Services Commissioners. In Italian Parco can be translated to Park in English, and "Tramonto" means sunset or setting. Although the suggestion from the public on the survey was spelled "Tramanto", the Commission recommended this Tramonto because of the sunsets that will be visible from this park. Fage 3 of 4 The Commission also liked Roscommon Park because many of Dublin's early settlers, such as the Fallons and Murrays, emigrated from Roscommon, Ireland to the United States and ultimately Dublin, California. ~ NOTICING REQUIREMENTS/PUBLIC OUTREACH: A copy of the Staff Report was distributed to the Parks and Community Services Commission.
