Youth-Advisory Comtnittee Application
1. I found out about the Y.A.C. through the City of Dublin Summer 2000 Activiy
Guide.
2. I know that the Youth Advisory Committee_ is a. program that gives teens the
chance to get involved with their peers to help make Dublin have-some better
activities for people of that. age group.
3. I am interested in serving on this committee because t feel that. gettinginvolved
with .others is a good way to help a community thrive, I also would like m do :it for
the fun of it. I know it makes a~ot-ofteens feel-~pec4al-to -know that theyhetped do
or put together something that their friends can-enjoy.
4. I think the most important skills t possess that would make me a strong candidate
for the Y.A.C. are my sociaibility,-my friendliness, and my humor, t know I would
be good at help.promoting things because I am definitly not scared to go out and
talk to people. I also feel my. humor could help on days when everyone seems a
little down therefor we could all be more progressive! (a tittle corny, I know!)
5. IfI could be involved in the planning of one .event I.think that it would have to be
the Dub Town Jam. This would be because t LOVE music, and it is such a coot
ideal I have never been to the Dub Town Jam but helping with all the planning
would-be awsome! Planning is-one.thing I love to do. I was even thinking of
starting a birthday party planning buisness for a summer money-maker!
6. The activities I am currently involved in are tennis, -hip-hop dance, and volunteer
work at the animal shelter.
7. I really don't think that the activities that I listed in question six will.effect my
time time commitment with.the Y.A.C..at att. Tenni. s is-in-the morning, -hip-hop at
4:00 PM once a week, and the animal shelter is'for whenever I am avah~ble.
8. If I am not chosen for the Youth Advisory.Commitee I would be interested in
Publicity and Promotions. This probably sounds strange because in number 5 I said
I would tike to be working, on Dub Town Jam. That is true, but like I said, I am a
social person and doing Publicity and Promotions seems like a lot of fun. I listed
Dub Town Jam as an event I would like to work on, not a committee.

1. HOw did you find out about this committee?
My interest in this committee was first sparkled by way of a passing remark from a friend,
who has served before on the YAC Committee. My intention to try out for the YAC was
confirmed after hearing it mentioned over the school's P.A system as well.
2. What do you know about the Youth Advisory Committee?
From what I understand, the Youth Advisory Committee is an opportunity for selected
teens to give their contributions and suggestions on issues that affect the youth of Dublin.
It is made up of teens from middle school to high school as well as adult advisors. This
committee also serves as a forum for teens to channel their ideas and services into the
development of activities for our youth.
3. Why are you interested in serving on the Committee?
I was excited when I heard about the Youth Advisory Committee; such an organization is
a great asset to any community, for a great many reasons. I believe that teens, with their
fresh ideas and vitality, can contribute greatly to a community. I am interested in serving
on this committee mainly because I want to help inspire more safe and positive activities
for teens. It concerns me to see some teens go off' on wayward paths instead of filling
their lives with meaning, hope, and good memories. I believe that with some effort and
planning, we can create a better future for our youth.
4. What skills do you possess that would make you a strong candidate for the Youth
Advisory Committee?
One of my strongest qualities is dedication. When I feel for a cause, or am moved by
something, my strongest motivator is often my determination. I have the energy,
motivation, and perseverance to face challenges and problems. I am also a responsible
individual who gives my best effort in whatever I do.
5. If you could be involved in planning for one event, what would it be? Please explain.
There are many events/activities that I wish to be involved in, but if I had to choose one
above all, it would be to plan a hobby/cultural day for teens. On an allocated time and
date, teens can get together and share their interests and/or glimpses of their heritage.
Some ideas would be bringing their favorite game/pastime to share. It would be a fun-
filled day with activities ranging from games to story-telling etc. Besides getting to know
one another, teens will get to know more people and learn more about different hobbies
and cultures.
6. What activities are you currently involved in or will be involved in the 1999-2000
school year?
Right now, I am involved with playing the piano at Level 5.
7. How would the activities in question #6 affect your time commitment to the Youth
Advisory Committee?
It would probably have negligible effect on my time commitment to the Youth Advisory
Committee. I can schedule my piano lessons/practice around to dedicate time to any
activities/meetings that require my presence.
8. If you are not selected to the Youth Advisory Committee, would you be interested in
serving on one of the following committees:
O Publicity & Promotions
O Dub Town Jam
Special Event Planning
O Teen Nights

Youth Advisory Committee Application
Louis Arcuri Dublin High School

Dublin, CA 94568
(925) 829-5790
1.) I first heard of the Youth Advisory Committee when, in the seventh grade, I received a
notice in the Wells Middle School cafeteria during a lunch period. The information
read something like this, "Join the Youth Advisory Committee. Just think of the
possibilities... Dances, concerts, ski trips, and more...For more information call [Park
and Recreation Department telephone number]." I called the given number. I was
informed that I must get an application from the Civic Center, fill it out, and return it.
Then I was interviewed and I was appointed to the committee.
2.) I know a lot about the Youth Advisory Committee. It is a city-organized group of
young Dublin residents in grades 6 through 12. Its goal is to represent the interests of
youth in this city so that we can make the city more youth friendly. The committee has
a set of bylaws, which provide that its members serve a one-year term from September
through August. This will be the fourth term of the Youth Advisory Committee. The
one event it has put on for three consecutive years is the Dub Town Jam in May.
3.) I am interested in serving on this committee because I do not like to complain without
taking action. Although Dublin is not the ideal city for students, I know that the
actions of a committee like this one can change that reputation. I realize that not all
people of any age have identical interests. But the goal. of a representative committee
like this one is, of course, to represent the people. It must discuss serious issues
affecting Dublin's young students, have direct contact with the students, and manage
its finances prudently. In my past experience, the committee has proposed many plans
but has not always followed these plans to completion. My goal is to be realistic and
reliable as a committee member, and to complete all tasks assigned to me.
4.) My "skills" are as follows: I am experienced at leading discussions and executing good
plans. I have a strong history of public speaking. I listen to opposing opinions and
debate with my adversary. I am sensible when spending the public's money. When I
begin a project, I complete a project. I have a thorough understanding of the
committee's bylaws, which I helped to amend this past year. I am familiar with
committee procedures, And I am good at keeping order at meetings.
5.) IfI coUld help plan one event, it would be a concert for student bands. I have begun to
help plan this event this year, and I hope to realize it next year. If I were in charge of
planning this event, the Youth Advisory Committee would send invitations to any

students we know who play in bands. Additionally, the committee would announce at
all the schools represented in it that student bands were invited to perform at a
concert, and to contact any of the committee members or staff. At the concert, I
would plan for only one large stage, with strobe lights (since the concert would be at
night) and a good sound system. I would publicize in the local newspapers. I would
organize a snack bar at one end of the concert hall, and I would use the money
collected from it to help support the concert. I would ask for corporate sponsors.
Everyone would receive a program for the night when they walked in. The bands
would be scheduled at specific times, and would be required to be at the concert hall
half an hour before the opening hour in order to insure that they were prepared to
perform and that we would not have any surprises during the concert.
I have served the community through the Youth Advisory Committee (1999-2000
term), the Dublin School Board, in which I hold a position as Student Representative,
and the Dublin High School leadership class. I play the piano. I play tennis and mn
with a cross-country team. I advocate legal cases on my school's Mock Trial Team.
There will be no activity that will continually conflict with my time commitment to this
committee. I do not have any regular scheduled activity on Thursday nights except for
the Youth Advisory Committee this past year. If a conflict should arise, I would need
to make a decision at that time. I would make every effort to avoid conflicts.
If I am not selected to serve on the Youth Advisory Committee, I would be interested
in serving on the Dub Town Jam subcommittee.

1. I found out about the Youth Advisory Committee by serving
on the committee for the 99-00 term. Prior to that term
I learned about the committee from the quarterly Dublin
publication.
2. I know that the Youth Advisory Committee has bylaws with
close parameters to those of the City Council. The
Committee organizes events for teens and makes
recormmendations to the Parks and Services Commission
about ways to make Dublin more teen friendly.
3. Last year I learned a lot from serving on the committee
and I would like to learn more this year. I Like to
organize and plan things out and it is a lot of fun to
work with the committee to plan events for teens so that
we can make Dublin more of a place where teens can have
fun.
4. I served on the committee for the 99-00 term and I know
all the rules and laws already. I have good
organizational skills and an interest in the teens of
Dublin. I was on student council last year as the
Sophomore class secretary and I was re-elected to be the
Junior class secretary next year. I know about
responsibility and I am very responsible. I was working
two jobs during the school year and I am still working
both of them with more hours during the summer.
5. i would like to be involved in the planning of Dub Town
Jam. I was the Dub Town Jam sub-committee chair for last
year's Dub Town Jam. I like the fact that it is the big
event of the year and that there are so many components
that have to come together to make the event work.
6. I am the Junior class secretary and on the prom committee
next year. I work after school as a receptionist at a
doctor's office. I also work for my church as a Sunday
school teacher.
7. All of my meetings for student council and prom committee
take place during school hours. The hours of my
receptionist job are only to 6:30, so I would be able to
attend the meetings regularly. I only work on Sundays as
a Sunday school teacher. I do not think that any
involvement in other activities that I am committed to
right now would affect my commitment to the Youth
Advisory Committee.

1. I was on the Youth Advisory Committee for the 1999-2000 term.
2. I know that the Youth Advisory Committee creates,-develops, sponsors, and promotes events
for teens, acts upon requests and opinions of the public, and offers advice and ideas to the
City Council on behalf of Dublin teens.
3. After serving on last years committee, I became more motivated than I have ever been.
Working with other creative and interested teens to better the community was something that
I enjoyed. I would like to be on this committee for a second year in order to follow through
with many of the projects that are still in progress and to continue the development of the
YAC.
4. I am full of creative ideas that, if expanded upon, could become major projects and goals
worth achieving. I am a good team worker, and I think that working with other people in a
group is a constructive way to check and balance this governmental faction. I have leadership
skills that will enable me to take charge of situations and bring order to the many projects we
will complete. I am a good listener, and will listen to other members' opinions and
perspectives before agreeing with or challenging them. I am goal-oriented and committed.
5. I would like to plan for the further development of a Youth Center. It is a wonderful idea,
and even though it did not materialize this year, maybe next year it will be a serious project
and we will be able to receive funding and approval.
6. I am involved in yearbook at my school as I will be next year. I am also involved in our
school's theatre program, and will participate in three plays next year. I take piano lessons,
and I am involved in the Youth Advisory Committee.
7. My schedule will be essentially the same as last year, and there were no serious conflicts with
my YAC involvement.

working on Teen Nights.

1. I served on the Youth Advisory committee during the past year (1999-2000). Before
that I worked on the Dub Town Jam sub- committee. I really enjoyed working on the

that I am more familiar with the aspect, I feel that I will take my roll a couple steps further
on it.

voice. The purpose of the committee is to come up with goals, and try everything within
their power to make those goals become reality. It is all about the Youth in Dublin
because one day it will be them that will be on city council, and it will be their decisions to
decide the future of Dublin. The committee is a way for youth interactions within Dublin
be positive. It creates a path to a wonderful city. A city that has the youth's attention as
well as the aduks.
3. I am interested in serving on Y.A.C. because I feel that it is important for Youth to be
able to be leaders in their communities. I know that I am a strong leader, and over the
past year my confidence has made a huge leap. Ill have an idea I want to make sure k is
heard, t think I am one person of Dublin who represents, not only myself, but every youth
who wants to be heard. Overall, I want to be involved in my community.
4. I have many assets that will make me a good leader. I love to interact with people,
especially the youth. Interacting with the people of your community is what makes you a
good leader, and that is something I am positive I can do. I am also interested in hearing
what everyone has to say. I make sure I get different opinions before I make a decision. I
represent the youth of Dublin in many more ways than one, and that is why I would like to
be apart of the Committee once again.
5. I don't think I could chose one event to be involved in. I like to help out with as many
thing's as possible because they are all so fun. I really enjoyed the youth nights, like the
karyoke. I also liked the Dub Town Jam this year. The events that draw the youth closer
together is what I am interested in being involved in the most, but I also like to implement
other ideas, and make those ideas soar. Being on the Youth Advisory Committee was
such a blast. Knowing that I can help make a difference, resulting from any event, is
amazing.
6. Next year I am going to be on HYPEST again. It stands for Helping Youth Practice
Educational Skills about Teen issues. This includes helping youth throughout Alameda
county deal with temptations, such as smoking or drugs. It is important to have a safe
community, and help other youth make the right decisions for their futures. Besides
HYPEST, I am involved with other program.~ at my school like CSF, and Friday Night
Live. I think I am going to be on Interact next year as well. During the summer I also
Lifeguard.
7. The activities I will be involved in next year will not effect my participation on the
Youth Advisory Committee in any way. I was involved in most of these things last year,
and they never prevented me from attending the meetings for Y.A.C. Most of the clubs
that I am involved in are during school hours, and HYPEST is only on Wednesdays, every
other week. The Youth Advisory Committee is very important to me, so I will make sure
I am there for everything that goes on, even if it means scheduling time-off.
8. IfI am not selected to serve on the Youth Advisory Committee, then I would love to
be involved in anything, or any committee. It is a pleasure to work with.

1. How did you find out about the Youth Advisory Committee?
I found out about the Youth Advisory Committee through my friend Shelley
Kahrg who is a council member. She told me about the program last September, I have
been attending meetings with her every month and helping with the activities that the
committee puts o1~
2. What do you know about the Youth Advisory Committee?
The Youth Advisory Committee's purpose is to provide the City of Dublin with
the youth of Dublin's views and prepare and put into action youth activities. I realize that
the time commitment is not just the once a month meeting, but considerable outside
preparation. I also know the importance of teamwork and background research which
projects that the Youth Advisory Committee chooses to pursue require. The Youth
Advisory Committee is not only fun but a great way to get involved. The people on the
committee have great ideas and leadership qualities. The Youth Advisory Committee
also puts on some great events that I enjoy going to.
3. Why are you interested in serving on this committee?
I am interested in serving on this Committee because I believe what the
Committee does is wonderful for the community. I would also like to be an official part
of the Committee with not only a voice, but also a vote. This last year I have served
basically as an unofficial member of the Committee.
4. What skills do you possess that would make you a strong candidate for the Youth
Advisory Committee?
I believe that I posses leadership skills that help me express my ideas without
putting down others and will also allow me to set an example for the teens of our
community. I believe my enthusiasm would help move along projects and keep everyone
in good spirits. The ideas I have are sensible and creative. I get along with others and
know when to take lead and when to be lead.
5. If you could be involved in the planning for one event, what would it be? Please
explain.
The event I would like to be involved in is the proposal of a teen center. The teen
center I think is something worth while that would benefit Dublin's youth. I do realize
that if the teen center happened it would probably come after I have graduated and gone
to college, but I still believe that teens need a place where they can go away from home
and relax with fi:iends.
6. What activities are you currently involved in or will be involved in the 1999-2000
school year?
I am a member of the St. Raymond Church Teen Choir. I am also a member of
the Service Learning Youth Committee (SLYC) of Pleasanton's Volunteer Center and
the Vice-President of the Alameda County Fair's Youth Ambassador Program. I attend
Carondelet High School where I am a member of the Concert Choir, the JV Swim Team,
the California Scholarship Federation and the National Honor Society.
7. How would the activities in question #6 effect your time commitment to the Youth
Advisory Committee?
Oddly enough, the above activities do not and would not adversely effect my time
commitment to YAC. Last year I successfully completed all the above and participated
fully in YAC. The Teen Choir is two nights a week, Tuesday and Saturday, for one hour
each. SLYC is one night a week, on Mondays, for an hour. The Fair Ambassador
Program meets once a month on a Saturday morning and works during the fair.
Carondelet's 'National Honor Society, California Scholarship Federation and Concert
Choir meet during school hours. Swim practice is from 5:30 AM - 7:30 AM every
morning February through May. On every first Thursday of the month I go to YAC
meetings. None of my activities run together and I still have lots of time to relax, after
my homework of course.
8. If you were not selected to the Youth Advisory Committee, would you be interested
in serving on one of the following committees: -publicity and promotions -special-
event planning - teen nights - dub town jam
I would like to be involved in teen nights because I have had so much fun at these
teen events this past year. Being able to help and experience the events was great.

1.) I Was part of the Youth Advisory Committee last year and really enjoyed it, so I
hoped I could be on next year.
2.) I know that the Youth Advisory Committee is a group of People that organizes group
and school events, such as dances, et cetera.
3.) I am interested in the Youth Advisory Committee, because I would really like to
become more, involved in the community than with just the Interact Club. I think that
it would be a great deal of fun to be in the Youth Advisory Committee. I have grown
up in Dublin and am excited about the oppommity to have some input on ideas and
activities that involve my peers and myself in this community. Lastly, I think that it
would look great on my application to Stanford (which is where I am planning on
going for college).
4.) Some of the skills that I have that would make me a superb candidate for the Youth
Advisory Committee is that I work great in groups. I am a very good problem solver
as well, and I am also very artistic. I am a really good people person, and I enjoy
coming up with some ideas for the community. I have very good leadership skills as
well. Lastly, I am a 4.0 student and was the Valedictorian for my eighth grade class at
Wells Middle School (97-98 school year).
5.) IfI could be involved in planning one event it would be a swing dance for the whole
Tri-Valley. I would love to teach anyone that would need any help Ieaming any of the
dance moves. I have actually taken a six week long swing dance class with one of my
good friends, and would know just how to set everything up. It would be great!! I
would also like to finish up on the Youth Band Showcase I am working on right now.
6.) I am currently involved in the Interact Club, and am holding a job that I have had for
just over a year now. I am also the drum major for Dublin High. Next year I will be in
some more clubs, I'm not quite sure just which ones though, and I will also play
tennis for Dublin High.
7.) Aside from practices for tennis or some community work for Interact, I really don't
think that I would have very much trouble with my involvement in the Youth
Advisory Committee. I can at any time ask for days off at work, and my practices for
drum major won't effect my time at all.
8.) I would be interested in serving on any one of these four committees ifI wasn't
chosen for the Youth Advisory Committee.
