SENIOR CENTER ADVISORY COMMITTEE
MEETING DATE: AUGUST 4, 2011
SUBJECT: Trips and Tours Program Update
Report Prepared by Anna Hudson, Recreation Coordinator
ATTACHMENTS: None
RECOMMENDATION: Receive report
FINANCIAL STATEMENT: None
DESCRIPTION: The Senior Center "Trips and Tours" program was reinstated for
Fiscal Year 2011-2012. There is a budget to offer 18 trips during the fiscal year. This is an average of
two trips offered each month from September 2011 until June 2012. The overall trip format has remained
the same; this includes how to register, payment and refund procedures, and pre-trip loading procedures.
Van driver, Howard Merrill will return to escort the participants on the trips. The first trip will offered in
September. The information will also be announced in the fall newsletter, which will be mailed to
supporters by mid-August.
Destinations this fall include Santa Cruz, Sausalito, Apple Hill, the Sonoma Vintage Festival, and two
musical theater productions.
The cost of the trips has increased by 30% to fully recover the direct cost of operating the program. Some
of the direct costs include the hourly cost of a driver, ongoing mechanic inspections, periodic oil changes
and maintenance, monthly car wash, and the fuel consumption. A minimum of ten pre-paid registrants is
usually required for a trip to be held. Following are the new registration fees:
Trips and Tours - Local Trips for Resident: $35.00; Non-Resident: $42.00
Trips and Tours - Distant Trips for Resident: $39.00; Non-Resident: $47.00
In addition to the van trips, Staff will continue to offer the Extended Travel opportunities provided by
Colette Vacations. The Livermore Amador Valley Transit Authority will schedule local trips periodically
to train seniors on how to utilize public transportation. Also the Dublin Senior Foundation's Monthly
Casino Trips will be scheduled utilizing a motor-coach bus. In addition, one overnight trip to Reno is
scheduled.
RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends the Senior Center Advisory Committee receive the
report.
