SUBJECT Recognition of Participants in the Northern California Junior Lifeguard Games

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:
The City coordinates the Junior Aquatic Water Safety (JAWS) Volunteer Program. This
program provides training for teens and helps them develop teaching and leadership skills while
volunteering at the Dublin Swim Center. Each season approximately 30 teens participate in the
program and provide over 1,700 hours of service at the Swim Center. On July 29, ten of the
volunteers participated in the Northern California Junior Lifeguard Games. Dublin's two teams
took first and second place in the overall competition.

RECOMMENDATION:
Staff recommends the City Council recognize the Junior Lifeguard Games participants.

DESCRIPTION:
The City coordinates the Junior Aquatic Water Safety (JAWS) Volunteer Program. This
program provides training for teens and helps them develop teaching and leadership skills while
volunteering at the Dublin Swim Center. Each season approximately 30 teens participate in the
program and provide over 1,700 hours of service at the Swim Center.
On July 29, 2011 the Bay Area Public Pool Operators Association held the Northern California
Junior Lifeguard Games in San Leandro. The competition included seven teams from five bay
area agencies including the City of Oakland, Greater Vallejo Recreation District, East Bay
Regional Park District and the City of Dublin. The competition had six events including a team
rescue relay, rescue tube assist, recovery of a submerged object, 25-yard sprint with a rescue
tube, one-rescuer CPR and a team cheer.
The City of Dublin sent finro teams to the competition. The entry fee for the Junior Lifeguard
Games was paid for by East Bay Pool Service, which maintains the Dublin Swim Center. The
team members included:

• Grant Erickson
• Cassidy Hearne
• Alyson Jones
• Trevor Magers
• Cole Ryken
• Alex Torrez
Alyson Chuyang and Tim Hoffman also attended the competition as volunteer victims for the
event. In preparation for the competition the junior lifeguards practiced six hours a week for
three weeks leading up to the event in addition to their regularly scheduled weekly trainings.
The City of Dublin's teams received awards as the first and second place teams for the overall
competition. Dublin's teams also took first place in the team rescue relay, rescue tube assist,
recovery of a submerged object, 25-yard sprint with a rescue tube, one-rescuer CPR and the
team cheer.
The City will recognize Dublin's competitors at the meeting with certificates of recognition from
the City Council.

A copy of the Staff Report was distributed to the Junior Lifeguard Games participants.
