Purchase of Ceremonial Irish Seal Insignia Chain

Authorize the Mayor to purchase a Ceremonial Irish
Seal Insignia Chain during the Mayor's upcoming trip to
Ireland.
Accept gift from Wente Brothers Winery and direct Staffto
prepare formal acknowledgement.
FINANCIAL STATI~MENT:
The estimated cost for the Chain is $1,300. Sufficient funds existin
the Council's Fiscal Year 1999-2000 Budget to fund the purchase of
the Chain.
DESCRIPTION:
In March 2000, the Mayor is scheduled to visit Ireland for the Dublin Ireland Millennium Celebration~ The
trip will feature visits to Trinity College, Bray Ireland Sister City Association and the Dublin Ireland
Chamber of Commerce.
To further the City's cultural exchange with the City of Bray, Ireland, the Mayor has spoken with
representatives from the Bray Sister City Association concerning the possibility of the City of Dublin
purchasing a Ceremonial Irish Seal Insignia Chain during the Mayor's upcoming trip to Ireland, similar to
the one worn by the Lord Mayor of Bray. The Chain would include round metallic discs engraved with the
City of Dublin and Bray City Seals. Additional discs would feature the names of Dublin Mayors.
It has been proposed that the Chain be worn at ceremonial' functions, such as during visits from
representatives from' Bray, Ireland, at the swearing in ceremony for Dublin Mayors and during future trips
to Ireland. The Chain could also be shown in a display case in the Dublin Civic Center.
During the trip to Ireland, the Mayor has also arranged to make special gift presentations to his hosts.
Wente Bros. Winery has generously offered to donate a case of wine for this purpose. Wente will facilitate
this donation through their importer in Dublin, Ireland.
RECO1M1MENDATION
Staff recommends that the Council authorize the Mayor to purchase a Ceremonial Irish Seal Insignia Chain
during his upcoming trip to Ireland, accept the gift from Wente Bros. Winery and direct Staffto draft a
letter for the Mayor's signature, formally acknowledging the generous donation.
