AGENDA STATEMENT
CITY COUNCIL MEETING DATE: February 18, 2003
SUBJECT: Plaque Monument and Flagpole at the Heritage Center
Report by Theresa Yvonne, Heritage and Cultural Arts Supervisor
ATTACHMENTS: '1. Correspondence from Dave Burton, Co-Chairman Old
Murray School Bell Tower Project.
2. Plaque mock-up
3. Site Plan of Heritage Center
RECOMMENDATION: t,Q~f~Approve the installation of a plaque and flagpole at the Dublin
~'5~. ,'~'- Heritage Center.
FINANCIAL STATEMENT: There is no cost to the City for purchase or installation of the plaque
or flagpole.
DESCRIPTION: As part of the Capital Improvement Program 2002-2007 the City
Council approved the construction of a duplicate of the original bell tower and bell replacement on the
Murray Schoolhouse located at the Dublin Heritage Center. The Dublin Rotary Club and the Dublin
Historical Preservation Association initiated a fundraising campaign to provide matching funds for the
project and the Dublin Women's Club committed funds for the purchase of the bell. These community
groups along with numerous private donors have committed close to $30,000 to the City for the
restoration of the bell tower and replacement of the bell.
In a letter received from Project Co-Chairman, Dave Burton (Attachment 1), the Dublin Rotary Club has
committed an additional $5,000 for a bronze plaque mounted on a monument. The plaque lists all the
donors that donated $100.00 Or more to the Bell Tower Project as a way of thanking them for their
contribution (Attachment 2). The dimensions of the plaque are 2' x 3' and will be inset into a concrete
stand approximately 2' wide and 3' height angled at approximately a 45 degree angle. The location for
the monument preferred by the Rotary Club and acceptable to Staff is in the landscaped area to the fight of
the Murray Schoolhouse marked on the map (Attachment 3).
The letter also discusses the donation of a flagpole by the Dublin Historical Preservation Association.
While the details of this donation have not yet been worked out, Staff does not anticipate any costs to the
City for the flagpole and will work with DHPA on the design and location of the flagpole.
The Heritage and Cultural Arts Commission has considered the request and approved the concept of the
plaque donation and installation at the Dublin Heritage Center.
RECOMMENDATION: It is the recommendation of Staff that the City Council approve the
installation of a plaque and flagpole at the Dublin Heritage Center.
