Thompson, Public Works Director ATTACHMENTS: 1) Resolution 2) Location Map RECOMMENDATION: 1) 3) 4) s) Open public hearing Receive Staff presentation and public comment Question Staff and the public Close public hearing and deliberate Adopt resolution approving installation of stop signs on Central Parkway at Hibernia Drive FINANCIAL STATEMENT: The cost of installing stop signs and painted legends is approximately $500. Sufficient funds are budgeted in the Street Maintenance Operating Budget to cover this cost. DESCRIPTION: The new Dougherty Elementary School which is located at the northeast comer of Central Parkway and Hibernia Drive, has just opened, and Staff has received a number of requests for traffic control from the parents of children who cross Central Parkway to go to school. This intersection currently has two-way stop sign control on Hibernia Drive; traffic on Central Parkway does not stop. A traffic signal is planned for this intersection; however, the signal installation is a condition of the Sybase development and will probably not occur for six to nine months, which is most or all of this school year. For safety reasons, Staff intends that the Central Parkway bridge will be closed until both the Central/Hibernia and Central/Tassajara signals are installed. The Central/Tassajara signal will be constructed by Shea Properties (Site 3) and should also be installed in about nine months. Traffic volumes on Central Parkway are expected to remain low until the bridge is open; however, it would alleviate some of the parents' concern if the Central Parkway crossing at Hibernia were stop sign controlled. The State Traffic Manual specifies that stop signs may be installed as an interim measure at intersections where signals are warranted. Notice regarding the proposed stop signs has been sent to California Creekside/Brookside residents, as well as the Archstone and Jefferson Apartment Complexes. Staff recommends that the City Council adopt the resolution approving installation of stop signs on Central Parkway at Hibernia Drive. ~:Xal~enmisc\central parkway stop signs COPIES TO: Dublin Unified School District ITEM NO.
