Spring quarter encompasses the months of April and May and the
first week of June . A total of "80" classes were offered with
"30" geared towards preschoolers and young children and "50" for
teens and adults . There were " 685" persons enrolled in the
departments program, which is an increase of "332" from the
Spring Quarter of 1985 . Of those classes offered, 68% were.
conducted, up 14% from Spring of 1985 . Exhibit A contains an
analysis of the classes offered, while Exhibit B offers a
comparison between the previous quarter as well as the same
quarter last year.
The activities of the Recreation Department are summarized below.
•
AFTERSCHOOL PLAYGROUNDS
The Afterschool Playground Program completed its second year of
operation at Murray and Nielsen Schools . The Murray program
consistently had an average of " 60" children per day throughout
the year . The enrollment at Nielsen picked up slightly after
they returned to the school site . They averaged "12" children
per day. The program at Nielsen never returned to the level of
operation that was maintained prior to being relocated to Shannon
Center .
FACILITY UTILIZATION
Overall utilization of Shannon Center was down approximately 2%
from Spring of 1985 . The Center was utilized 22% of the
available hours with the Social Hall utilized most heavily (54% ) .
Although the Center was utilized quite extensively for classes,
private rentals were slightly lower than in 1985 which may
attribute for the 2% decrease .
LEISURE ENRICHMENT CLASSES
Leisure Enrichment Classes are fee based and are offered for all
ages in a variety of interest areas . A total of "54 " classes
were actually conducted as compared to "37" the previous quarter.
The Department is constantly adding new classes to meet the
growing interests of the community.
PRESCHOOL CLASSES
The Preschool Program completed its first year of operation
during the quarter. Enrollment reached capacity in the final
12-week session . An afternoon session will be available in the
Fall in an effort to accommodate the growing interest . Program
evaluations were distributed at the conclusion of the session.
Comments were very positive and the majority were pleased with
the "parent participation" concept .

are free of charge . Basic Financial Planning and Car Care were
offered during the Spring quarter.
Car Care is taught by a representative from the California State
Automobile Association. Thirty six (36 ) participants learned the
basics of automobile preventative maintenance . Basic Financial
Planning attracted "33" persons eager to learn how to better
manage their personal finances .
SPECIAL EVENTS
. One special event was conducted during the Spring quarter. The
"Spring Lake Festival" was held at Shadow Cliffs in Pleasanton on
April 20 . This event was sponsored in conjunction with the East
Bay Regional Park District and the Livermore , Pleasanton and San
Ramon Recreation Departments . While most of the 3, 000 people in
attendance were there to enjoy the warm weather, the event did
provide an opportunity to promote the Department .
TRIPS AND TOURS
Three ( 3 ) trips were planned, but due to low enrollment two (2 )
were cancelled. The San Francisco Outlet Extravaganza was the
one successful trip with "33" participants . The trip took
